Prominent Elk Wills Diamond to Sweet heart He Could Not Marry. BOSTON', Juty 30. The will of John D. O'Shea, of Lynn, Ma&, grand trus tee of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, who died in Philadelphia during the national convention, brings to light a romance that has lasted a quarter of a century. In his will he left $2300 and hit dia mond ring to Miss Hattie M. Evan, of Lynn, Mass., a stenographer. Friends saj that 25 years ago O'Shea paid court to Miss Evans and that the admiration was returned. When matrimony was proposed various objections were made by the parents owing to religious differ ences of the families. Both the young people continued to live in Lynn and it was known to in timate friends that it was because of their attachment that neither married, j O Shea left an estate valued at $30,000. ENCAMPMENT OF ARTILLERY. On August 6 the First Battery, Ore gon Field Artillery, will go into camp at Seaside, the camp site being close to the Seaside ilou-e and practically the sauie a where the Third Oregon In fantry was recently encamped. The iull battery will be at Seaside under coin maud of Captain II. U. Welsh. A part of the instruction will be in umrkanun- liip and for this purpose 15,000 rounds of ball cartridges will be given by the state for practice with the pistol. The three-inch rifles with which the battery is equipped will have a target range on the beach. The pieces will be placed on the beach and will fire toward Tillamook Head into the side of a mountain, a dis tance of 3500 or 4500 yards. Over 100 rounds of Schrapnel and shell will be used in this practice. WOODMEN ATTEND THEATER. SEATTLE, July 30. The visiting delegates to the head camp session of the Woodmen of the World convention, ttm in Motion in Seattle, were the guests of the local Woodmen at a thea ter party at the Grand Opera House last night. Nearly the entire lower floor was reserved for the Woodmen. After the business session today they will take a trip on Lake Washington on the steamboat Fortuna and in the evening a dance will be given at Meydenbaur Bay, on the east side of the lake. The convention will come to a close August I and a clas, of 1000 will be initiated at the Dreamland Kink in the evening. AUTOS TO COME SOUTH SbATTLE, July 30. A combined movement Is afoot on the part of auto mobile enthusiasts in Tacoma aud Se attle to improve the roads between Chehalis and Vancouver. The road from Seattle to Chehalis are satisfactory the motorists, but from the latter point to the Columbia river they are declared impassable in many places. There are COO automobiles in Seattle and a large number in Tacoma, and near ly all are enthusiastic over the pros poet of making Sunday trips to Portland which they declare Is almost impossible at present because of the condition of the roads. It is believed that with good roadg between the Puget Sound cities and Portland at least 25 or 30 automo- bilists would take the ride to Portland every Sunday. In order to insure success to the move ment ,the matter will be taken up by motorists of the three cities with the oiinty authorities in the counties where the roads need improving. Pressure will be brought to bear upon them in such a way that they will make the matter o:' better roads a question of prime Import ance and carry the work to an early conclusion. WATER FOR ARID LANDS. BOISE, July 30. XEW YORK, July 30.-AU the records of the United -States Steel Corporation for the manufacture of steel were shown to have been broken when the company's report fr the quarter ending June 30, 1007, was made public. The report shows that the total net earnings for the spring quarter were $4.,3O3,705, the high water murk for any single quarter in the company's history. This is an increase oi $..,378,072 over the corresponding quarter for last year. PICK STARTS EXPLOSION. HELENA, July 30.-Chnrles Butler, representing Dittmer, Bradbury 4 Whit- bach, a firm of Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul construction contractors, was instantly killed, and Joseph Roberts, an employe, was badly injured by an explo sion of dynamite on the new transcon tinental line east of here. Roberts struck his pick against a primer covered with dirt in a mine and an explosion followed. Roberts was brought to a Helena hos pital. He will probably recover. MAGILL CASE STARTED, CLIXTOK, 111., July 30. -Post master Davidson was the first witness before the grand jury this morning in the in vestigation relative to Mrs. Mngill's death. He was an intimate friend of the Magill family and believes no in dictment will be returned against Ma gill. The prosecution says its strongest evidence will be presented this afternoon. M0YER FURNISHES BOND. - BOISE, July 30. After a delay of really 30 hours, Charles II. Moyer, presi dent of the' Western Federation of Miners was released ifrom jail at a late hour tonight 011 a $25,000 bond signed by Timothy Reagan and Thomas J. Joincs of Boise. Moyer will leave for Salt Lake tomorrow night in company with Haywood. After a stop of a few hours at that place they will proceed to Denver. Fifty of these were cabin passengers and seven were steerage. Only 11 of 59 member of the crew are now missing. This brings the total of the missing, i passengers and crew, to 77. It U the consensu of opinion among wrecker and seafaring men that none of the bodies of the drowned passengers will ever be recovered.
