THE MORNING ASTOIUAN, ASTOIUA. OREGON. SUNDAY, JULY 14, 1907. CREDITABLE TO CITY . . AND CRAFT JUDD BROTHERS THROW OPEN THE DOORS OP THEIR HANDSOME NEW HOUSE ON COMMERCIAL STREET VERY UNIQUE ESTABLISHMENT. The firm-style of Judd Brothers is graven, modernly, and deeply, on the commercial roster of tbe City of Astoria. It is there to stay, p.y and flourish. The handsome new quarter of the Brownsville Woollen Mill Store, at No. 657 Commercial street, two door east of Twelfth, vouch for a good deal in the way. of intelligent understanding and purpose on the part of the young proprietor and the establishment i credit to the city and the cnut it rep resents. There is no parallel for it here, and in soma particulars, none in the state. In moving to the direct center of the city, the Messrs. Judd determined to leave nothing undone to make the store absolutely par with the times; and to this end, aside from the general beautiful equipment of the place, with its angle- fitted plateglasa front and elegant fix tures throughout the interior, they have introduced the popular eastern novelty of the wordrobe-display system whereby a customer may; critically examine a j hundred suits of apparel without moving out of his tracks. The new store i not yet finished, a 30-foot extension being contemplated during the pre-ent month, in the rear with a solid glass root' for lighting purposes. An Astorian reporter took an hour oil yesterday to leisurely scan the splendid new stock just in-tailed at the house and if there is anything that the well dressing ,1907-humau employs to en hance his wardrobs that cannot be found there, he failed to note jts absence. The adroit method of housing the immense stock at first glance conveys the idea that there is nut niucb of it, but this is quickly dispelled by the rapid revelations incident to the s'.iowii.g of the several Ikies, all carefully and compactly dis posed, departm. ntnly, with the primary advantage of pe.fectly protecting every article from ti;e ravage oi dust, and secondarily, of con-erving space; the system making for the preservation of every attribute of color, texture and condition. The extraordinary and far-reaching reputation of the "Browi sville" lines is a manifest guaranty of the character of the goods this house is to -ell and can not be discounted upon any known hypo thesis. It is one of those sure and ac cepted bases of bu-iness that leave the customer free to indulge his taste as to color and style, the question of fabric bavins been settled for him at the mills; an avdautage widely appre ciated these days, and oe that Me-srs. Judd will adhere , to unswervingly, to their own abundant success and the certain satisfaction of their large and growing clientcile. BALL GAME. Jaloff 120 llth Street Z The Leading COMMITTEE GOES OS BOARD MAYOR, ACCOMPANIED BY RECEP TION COMMITTEE, BOARD U. S CRUISER CHARLESTON TO RE CEIVE ADMIRAL SWINBURN. The I'nited Slates cruiser anchored off the O. It. A X. dock at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. It was expected that she would be greeted with a salvo of whistles from the boats at the wharves and from the mills and variou steam using plants ashore but none was forthcoming. Soon after the big cruiser had dropped anchor the Mayor and the reception committee to Vice-President President Fairbanks boarded the Cus toms launch Patrol and steamed out to the cruiser. The committee went aboard and presented themselves to Admiral Swinburne and as la told elsewhere In these column made arrangement for the fitting reception of the Viee-iPresi- Almost immediately after the cruiser had dropped anchor three lauuehes came off from her and proceded to take sound ings of the waters iu the vicinity of her anchorage. One launch came to the. 0. K. A X. dock and the officer in charge dispatched a number of telegram. After the com mittee had leJ't the vessel she heaved her anchors and steamed back up the river and anchored in the channel nearly at Tongue Point. Why this change of berth was made is difficult to under stand. The raison d'etre of the Charles ton's visit was and is that she might lie present at and take part in the re eeptiou to Vice-President Fairbanks. So far as this vessel is concerned now and the part site may take in the fes tivities she might just as well be moored in Manila harbor. It is entirely out of the question to connect this move with Astorians, op the major part of them, the eers aboard the ship. While in the river the cruiser is in the hands of a river pilot, and her safety is entirely trusted to his competency. Unfortunately for Astoria, or the major part of them, the man who in this instance has robbed a loyal community of it rights and in terest in, and desiiv to view, one of its own vessels a vessel with which few afloat can compare -is a so-called river pilot of the name of Patterson, who rails from Portland. It seem that this man abrogates to himself the supreme right of robbing Astorians of a pleasure which comes to them seldom a pleasure and an interest which is every American's right and moreover which is to their benefit and takes the vessel in his self sufficient way very nearly out of sight ot the town. Enough about this man Patterson. Astorians are loyal enough anyhow and will doubtless vi-it the vessel despite her far-off anchorage, and in response to Admiral Swinburn's gctv erous offer to put her at the disposal of the public between the hours of 10 and 12 a. 111. and 1 and 5 p. ni. today. Xumbers of people will visit hep. She is worth it for she is a crack ship, and if not the pride of the navy she must come near being so. Xo one should miss the opportunity of visiting her. She is a picture of -trength and efficiency, and to a com munity o! seamen, as Asionans are, she should make the strongest of ap peals. catcher; Brakke, pitcher; Gates, first base; Griffin, 2nd base; Graham, third base; Blossom, shortstop; Pool, left fielder; Wooten, centerfielder; Carlsen, rightfleld. hllLLIHERY EXTRA SPECIAL $1.98 Milliner WATERFRONT ITEMS The British Ship Idle Up the River THE U. Oltn of the best vaudeville show that ever got together Is running at the Waldorf this week. Whilst the regular stock company is giving a series of iiw acts sml songs which are all of a first class order, and as fur as the acts art concerned of a moat laughable and humorous nature, the two new turns are something quite out of the ordinary run. The act of the 'fiat Ttams Is far and away aliove the ordinary run of hows given at. a vaudeville house. The marvelous manner In which the male performer throws his knives at th board against which Is companion stands and still leaves her unharmed, is extraordinary hcvond cmnnrehimiinn. f 1 and must be seen to be believed. Stan ley and Weaver, In their slack wire act, are a clever and humorous combination, which should not be missed on any to count. The Irish act is excruciatingly funny. Altogether, the whole show li very strong and there Is no better en ti rtainment in the city, do and tee this show and yon will enjoy yourself m. menl.
