Eddie Querin Is Only Man Who Ever
Escaped Alive From Devil's Island
English Authorities Refuse To Return
Him To France.
CHICAGO, June 15. The Inter-Ocean
today says:
Eddie Guerin, the international bur
glar and safe cracker, and the only man
to accomplish the feat of escaping alive
from the French penal prison, Devil's
Island, where Dreyfus was at one time
a prisoner, is walking the streets of
London a free man, according to news
received in Chicago last night. Guerin
who came to Chicago after his escape
from Devil's Island went from here to
London, where he was recaptured. His
esse has been a thorn in the side of
British justice.
Guerin's last release came following
the decision that the man who perpe
trated one of the boldest crimes that
ever set the French capital talking, is a
Ttritish subject, and on that account
cannot be given up to the French au
thorities.
Edward Guerin is catalogued in In
spector fiyrnes book as a notorious
western criminal. In 1901 he was con
victed in Pari of robbing the America
Express Company of $30,000 and of a
previous robbery of $JO,000 from the
Rank of Lvons. The court eave the
extreme penalty of imprisonment for
life on Devil's Island.
MORE PLEAD GUILTY.
Seven Other Furniture Finns Were Fined
In Federal Court.
PORTLAND. June 15. Seven, more
furniture Anns pleaded guilty .in the
Federal district ceurt to having been
associated with others to restrain inter,
state commerce. They were John B.
: Baker, Pendleton j R. Veal, Albany; A.
H. Lippmann, Prineville; Standard Fur
nitu're Co., Bake City. These were fined
$25. J. L. Sharon, Lewi Hunter and
jL. A. Eddings of Pendleton, were fined
$10 each.
HAMPTON ROADS DISASTER.
Investigating Board Finds Launch Was
Cut In Two By Towline.
TOVSHIXGTOX, June 15, Secretary
of the Navy Metcalf today received a
report that the board which has been
investigating the drowning of the mid
shipmen and sailors in Hampton Roads,
on Monday niifht, will find that the
launch was cut in two by a wire cable
tow line. The Secretary said that he
will wait fop a formal report before an
nouncing any details.

CHICAGO, June 15. A dispatch to
the Record Herald from San Francisco
says:
Mrs. Wong Sun Yue, sister of Mrs.
Howard Gould i no longer an American
citizen. She voluntarily relinquished
her rights as a native born Californinn
yesterday to become as much as possi
ble an all-round Chinese, like her hus
band. The records of the local Cliinese bu
reau are lacking in cases similar to that
of Mrs. Wong Sun Yue. She will be
subject to the laws of China, when she
visits that country and when she comes
home she will be subject to the regula
tions of the immigration and restric
tion laws.
Mrs. Yue, who renounced her citizen
ship to become a Chinese merchant said:
"As a Cliinese merchant mnny paths
are open to me which were closed be
fore. I have become a member of the
tailoring firm called the Quong Yuen
Yick. Its the dragon for me instead of
the stars and stripes.'

ing yetserday, is much better. Mr. Taft

Chambers Lake Dam Said To Have Been
Carried Away.
FORT COLLINS, Colo., July 15.
Great fear is felt here over a report
from up the river that the big dam at
Chambers Lake, which has been holding
back 70,000,000 cubic feet of water, has
gone out and that a wall of water five
high is now rushing down the Cache Ln
Poudre River. It is believed that all the
people living in the lowlands and on the
river bank hnve escaped, but it is feared
that many fishermen may have been
caught In the flood.

The Waldorf Theater.
The management at the Waldorf
theater has decided to give their excel
lent performance in the afternoon as
well as In the evening and henceforth
the matinee will start at 2:30, beginning
this afternoon. This afternoon and
evening will be the last opportunity to
witness the present show as the bill
changes Monday and Manager Wise lias
done everything In hi power, a far as
money and work could do, to make the
bill which starts Monday as near to
