HE WAS ON DEVIL'S ISLAND Eddie Querin Is Only Man Who Ever Escaped Alive From Devil's Island English Authorities Refuse To Return Him To France. CHICAGO, June 15. The Inter-Ocean today says: Eddie Guerin, the international bur glar and safe cracker, and the only man to accomplish the feat of escaping alive from the French penal prison, Devil's Island, where Dreyfus was at one time a prisoner, is walking the streets of London a free man, according to news received in Chicago last night. Guerin who came to Chicago after his escape from Devil's Island went from here to London, where he was recaptured. His esse has been a thorn in the side of British justice. Guerin's last release came following the decision that the man who perpe trated one of the boldest crimes that ever set the French capital talking, is a Ttritish subject, and on that account cannot be given up to the French au thorities. Edward Guerin is catalogued in In spector fiyrnes book as a notorious western criminal. In 1901 he was con victed in Pari of robbing the America Express Company of $30,000 and of a previous robbery of $JO,000 from the Rank of Lvons. She voluntarily relinquished her rights as a native born Californinn yesterday to become as much as possi ble an all-round Chinese, like her hus band. The records of the local Cliinese bu reau are lacking in cases similar to that of Mrs. Wong Sun Yue. She will be subject to the laws of China, when she visits that country and when she comes home she will be subject to the regula tions of the immigration and restric tion laws. Mrs. Yue, who renounced her citizen ship to become a Chinese merchant said: "As a Cliinese merchant mnny paths are open to me which were closed be fore. Great fear is felt here over a report from up the river that the big dam at Chambers Lake, which has been holding back 70,000,000 cubic feet of water, has gone out and that a wall of water five high is now rushing down the Cache Ln Poudre River.
