The more one hears of Harry Orchard he harder it becomes to classify him; but more for the -want of a class, than for the elementary', reason! that might give specific assignment. " It develops, at last, that the man really has feelings, " emotions, nerve; that they may be aroused to the point of expressionj that he possesses tear ducts that are actually useable; that he is amenable to the same pressure and effects of reproachful speech other peo ple are, and exhibits the same sort of reaction thereto other normal mortals do. Up to the moment be allowed bis eves to fill with tears at the mention of hia Cripple Creek wife, it was common conclusion that ha was a veritable monster, 'minus all feeling and the niesns of significant manifestation of the eame. Before he is off the witness stand it is barely possible that we shall find him giving further and more re markable testimony of the possession of human emotions and impulses; in which event he will lapse back to the ordinary. uninteresting pha-e of a mere every day being, and lose cast, forever, as pervert oar excellence: a consumma tion that will be disappointing to a ho4 of people who hare been counting on him for the foundation of a thousand varying literary enterprises, and now they will have to fake the whole busi cess. It's too bad- o : TOTE BIT OF FAME. There is a rare bit of fame being stored np for Ezra Meeker, the hale old pioneer who hag retraced the trail he followed to Oregon and the Northwest in 1852, in the same old "prairie schooner" he used then, to the New York of today. He is somewhere to the eastward of Buffalo today and plodding along at 20 miles a day, en route to the home of the President of the coun try, at Oyster Bay, L. L He is accom panied by a journalist, a photographer, Idleness the Deadliest Sin. : By Rtr. & l. AKEA Famous Ensllth Divine, Now of New Vork. To this ministry NO LIMITS CAN BE SET. Its parish Is the whole wide world of anon, but there is ouo precise and specific application to it to which no American who loves his country can afford to be indifferent. ' ' , i " i It is not forme to lecture about American conditions, It is tot me to learn nat they are. But the most thoughtless onlooker from the old world who has ever read a page of history knows that in the rush to these shores of millions upon millions of tho European peoples Americans are confronted by a problem such as no nation has yet had to solve SINCE HISTORY BEGAN. I read the figures which set this problem visibly before the eyes of men, and I am lost in amazement j- The quickest way, the most economical AND THE MOST PERMANENT WAY of making these people good Americans and good patriots is to make them good Christians. To u. who know and to men snd women like us are intrusted this solemn responsibility and the SPLENDID privilege. The real' compensation to this wonderfully energetie old man, however, will be the granting of his heart's desire, the crea tion of a national highway of the old road from the Missouri to the Pacific, by the Government, in commemoration of the great pioneer throng that fol lowed that trail to the west and con tributed to the nprearing of an empire out here. If this generrous and grate ful wish is granted him, be will have done his own most prideful task, and rendered the people of the past, and the future, an Immense service. "HE WAS A MAN." ' Not alone the State of Alabama, the South, but the whole country, loses heavily in the death of such a man as United States Senator John T. Morgan. He was not only a leader in the Demo cratic party and its sponsor and cham pion in the great national house, but he was a thinker and doer along the broadest lines of human endeavor, and clean to his last fibre. In the half cen tury of public life that lies to his credit, not one small nor questionable circum stance rises against him; and it is one of the real pleasures of a public writ er's work to chronicle such a fact. He was always to the front with some big and useful thing and commanded whole some respect for everything he stood for; some of these presentations were not what the country wanted; but hi espousal of them was not the least of the merits that recommended them, and so far as he was concerned they were most considerately, when adversely, dia- Johnson's j& j& Wood Finishing Specialties and Ornamental Hardwood Floors I Ref Inish Your Woodwork Furniture and Floors.
