' Even the Portland Oregonlan is be ginning to sit up and take notice of the (act that James J. Hill has invaded Oregon and is in actual command of the new railroad situation developing In the coast country. It Is well to re alise things thus early, because it will soon Je up to the metropolis to so ad Just her financial and commercial pres tige to the rare elements inherent in the new program, as shall leave them undisturbed and undiminished; for it goes without discussion that Portland must by right as the only great cen ter of business and business resources In the State, be still in the forefront of consideration in the adjustment of the great new deal. What shall innure to Astoria by rea son of this broad and certain devel opment is a matter of the future, and , will be measured largely by what Astoria shall do for herself in the premise. She may grow to a com manding position in the evolution now at hand; and walla she gradually at tains to the foremost place in Oregon commerce becomes the shipping de pot of the Columbia basin, and a big .factor on the line of coast rail ser vice, Portland will always figure heavi ly ad authoritatively in the work of maturing the , splendid' progress In ieW.. The one, and the chief, result of the new adjustment of progressive detail, however, la that Portland ceases to be the autocratic and controlling power in he field. The supremacy she has wielded for so many years in unques tioned and arrogant fashion, is now modified by its dependence upon the new and counter-balancing force that ha entered here and will assert its claim to dominance. It is already at tracting the thoughtful attention and respect of the 'press and people of the metropolis and it is to be hoped it will not have to measure its strength with Portland in any other way than in mutually advantageous courses prolific of the best ends for all con cerned. This city is at last in line for rec ognition denied her through the years; she is, finally, within the compass of men and purposes that must take cog nizance of her and her claims; she can now fight her way to place and influ ence without the deturrent Influence of a commercial Jealousy that hai bjen all too '"ccessfuj.' V -t ol defeat she encounters from now on, will not be due to the over-weening prestige of her sister up the river; she is free to ask, and strive, and successfully de bate, her way to accomplishment and to secure ' possession. And what is more, she will lay out her program at once, and go at it logically and cour ageously; for Mr. III11, nor no power that may be in the saddle, Is going to If the 1908 fight Is to be between Taft and Hoke Smith, the articles will of course, provide a forfeit for weight, : , o " They are catching Banker Walker rapidly In a great many places.
