The Standard Oil Company Is n'U the only giant mill that Is grinding the lives and hopes and opportunities from the people. Th? railroads, such as those combined under the control of E. H. Harrlman. are measuring close ,ly up with the Standard, ami furnish ing another clear ssect;uJi!uLhe aw ful system of robbery to which this nation is subjected.. We are not in different to the magnitude of the work p?rformed by these tremendous organ izations, nor to the huge investments they have really made in the prose cution of their vast businesses: we believe this should be carefully weighed in the balances that are to be .struck as between them and the peo ple and that they should be given due credit for the immense risk and won derful realization, taken, and achieved. But the hour of adjustment is at hand; and the deliberate, calculated, conscienceless, limitless thievery of which they are guilty must be abat ed, or the end will be something un dreamed of. The work of the Inter State Commerce Commission In New York and Chicago, in connection with the Htrriman roads, is superb, and it should go on to the utter ascertain ment of the last particle of informa tion to be wrung from the railroad trust, that the people may know some thing, at least, of the burd-ns they are bearing, and get in position to fight back. The patience of the American is unparalleled, but it has its limita tions, tnd once the boundary of for bearance is reached, there will be a frightful reaction. The Oregon legis lature has the very opportunity of his tory itself, to make a record in this direction and the people are quietly looking for big and honest results; re sults that mean something, and un less they are forthcoming there will be a sorry homecoming for the men who lay down before the Oregon end of the vast scheme of patent scound. rellsm in railroad affairs. COAST AND VALLEY RAINS. There was a sharp Yank' out here some years at;o. who insisted that the name "Oregon" was a corruption of the expression, "oh! Haiti Actio!" and the present winter would seem to jus tify the queer derivative just a lit tle. We can get out of doors, slosh round, carry en business and ward oft the worst of what besets us. but over to the eastward they are burled in snow, surrounded with ice, nipped with frost and blinded with blizzards. We are having the best of it this season and are thankful for the distinct favor, and rejoicing that the weather bureau and the climatic ministrations are yet beyond the con trol of the combines. The apple has al ways been conspicuous as an element of discord and we arc leary of the result of the fruit convention in prospect on this very score.
