6 TIIE MOttttfra A&TOIttAN, ASTOKtA, OREGON. SATURDAY) JUNE 30, 1008. I The most wonderful piece of natural sculpture la the world may be seen by hay visitor to the Cape Verde island. This specimen of natural art work la without doubt the moat colossal and marvelous freak known to the geolo gists and geographers. San Vlncente Is the principal town of the islands. As the ship enters the harbor of the above named place one aces a bold ridge of dark volcanic rocks lying In the distance. The crest of this ridge forms an exact likeness of Washing ton, the figure lying apparently face upward, as If In sleep. The large, bold features, the backward wave of the hair, the rotund form of the mnas Ive shoulders and even the frills on his colonial shirt are reproduced on a scale of such magnitude and grandeur as to be absolutely startling. The fidelity of the outline Is such that the freakish forms assumed by the stalactites and stalagmites in the well known natural caverns are not suits ble comparisons. This strange natural monument to the greatest of American heroes is the first object to meet the gaze of the observing sightseer as he approaches the Cape Verde islands. With the boundless ocean for its back ground and the tropical sky overhang ing It, it is no flight of the Imagination .when we say that the freak forms a tableau of overpowering magnificence. WASTED. Carrying a lighted candle and kneeling by her coffin, he exclaimed passionately: , 'Would I could die! Would I could die! Just then the wind closed the door and ex tinguished the light The bereaved lover who had Just prayed for death rushed to the door. He could not open it.He tore at it knocked, kicked, troggled, calling loudly for help. No answer, only the utter silence and dark ness of the tomb. His wish to die was forgotten. He sank down and wept. His tears were not for his beloved, but for himself. He felt pangs of hunger. He thought of his candle and cut it Into four parts. He ate the first quarter the first day, the second the second day, the third on the third, the last quarter the fourth day. No more, and he must die of starvation. He made one more desperate effort to burst the floor, when it suddenly opened, and the keeper of the cemetery stood before him. i The sunlight blinded him. He fell . from exhaustion. IA recent English traveler In China letcribes some remarkable examples tt sounding stones, or "stone gongs" jrWch he saw at Chufu. the birthplace lad burial place of Confucius. One of the atones, which are composed of a grayish s oolitic limestone, has been leaped into a cover for an Incense dish placed in front of the tomb of the grandson of Confucius. When struck wim a sack or with the knuckles It rings like bronze, and the sound is so listinct that it is difficult to believe without inspection that the object is not really composed of metal.
