Over the wlros place sheets of music, ami wheu you strike a tow you will (liul that It has a rattling sound. If now you play tune In the same niannor. with the sheets of music still lying on Uio strings. It will sound as If the lustru- Bieut were a haujo. Auyhow, It Is a good Imitation. Now remove the music sheets ami press down gently, but nnuly, the keys belonging to any cord. Take the simple cord 0, E, t;, for example. The keys must be pressed down, with out sounding ibem ami held down while some one gently brushes the triugs with a feather or a straw. The effect will he as If the cord were play ed far away and Is tieard ly you as very soft tones. Change the cord, always presslug down the keys without souudlng them, while the feather still sweeps the triugs lightly. In this way you may modulate or play a slow piece, and the effect will be very beautiful. Indeed, as if heard from a great distance. The reason of this is that ordinarily a damper rests against each string. but wneu the erreKudlng key Is struck or pressed down the damper Is raised. In sweeping the strings with the feather, lightly, only the strings that are umlauipered sound, the others being held mute by the dampers, but If the touch of the feather Is too heavy even the other strings may souud. so your care must be In making a light and delicate touch. Now press down a key gently and hold it. Strike very hard the octave above this key, but do not hold it after striking the tone. When the wire ol the tone struck has been sufficiently dampered, so that it does not sound so loud, the pressed down key will b beard to "sing-" dearly, eveu though It was not struck, nils Is because every note struck Is composed of sev eral notes, beiug iu reality a cord In Itself, and. each note contained in that cord causes the corresponding note In the keyboard to vibrate, or "sing," In sympathy If held down in like man ner. The other notes that will sound undet these conditions will always be the fifth above the octave, the second oc tave and the third and fifth above that, and these tones that sound are called "overtones." For Illustration, if (' in the lower part of the piano le struck, any or all of the notes that follow will sound If their keys are first pressed and held down. Philadelphia Tress. POINTED PARAGRAPHS. When you are all done but finishing you are Just half done. If you have time to boast about be ing worked to death, you have not much to do. Some people are so unfortunate that their troubles make people laugh in stead of cry. A man who underestimates himself may be tiresome, but he Is not a cir cumstance to the man who brags. People may disdain u compliment, but they feel a tender little spot in them where it hit and refused to be dislodged. It is a theory growing in conviction that the man who says a mean thing about another isn't as mean as the man who carries it. The man who travels over the path behind you wisely looks at your foot prints and sees where you could have avoided many a pitfall. - Atchison Globe. Tin 7 Treea. The midget of the whole tree family Is the Greenland birch, it is a perfect tree iu every sense of that term and lives Its allotted number of years from 75 to 180 Just as other species of the great birch family do, although its height under the most favorable condi tions seldom exceeds ten Inches. Whole bluffs of the east and southeast coast of Greenland are covered with "thick ets" of this diminutive species of woody plant, and In many places where the soil Is uncommonly poor and frozen from eight to ten months a year a "forest'' of these trees will flourish for half a century without growing to a height exceeding four inches. Strang Dance., Queensland's government aboriginal settlement on Eraser's island holds a weekly dance for the blacks. Among the bundles of old clothes sent to the settlement there are often ball gowns, so the gius sport decollete dresses. Neither sex wears boots. The sexes have to dance separately. Sydney Bul letin. Shrewd Goesa. Senior Partner We must he careful not to give Killings any more credit He's evidently losing money. Junior Partner-How do you know? Senior Partner I heard his remark today that "life is full of ups and downs." No man ever admits that until he begins to strike the down.-I'hiladelphia Press. nJcteil. "I have called," said the confident young man, with a manuscript sticking out of his pocket, "to see whether there is a vacancy in this office." ".No," replied the melancholy editor as he looked round the place; "I'm sor ry to say there is none. Even the waste paper banket Ik full." All the telegraphic and local news in the Morning Astorian. Variety la Olet Mereaaary to Wall Belaar of Kawln, Much Is continually being writteu In papers deallug with poultry as to tin correct feeding of fowls, but when alt li said and done the gist of the advice resolves Itself Into this; (ilvc enough nourishing food, and give variety. Tc our thinking, not enough stress Is laid on the latter point. The dietary whkl has been decided upon may coutala Just the right umouut of alhumlnolda etc., which Is considered to I the thing for correct feeding, but If this "bal anced ration" be glveu for any length ol time without variation the fowls wit tiro of It. It w ill thou lose Its value aa a food, ami the object with which It was glveu will be partly defeated. Any poultry keeper who gives tb matter a moment's thought and wh at all studies the comfort and well being of his stink will be careful tc avoid mouotony In the food given. Where as much variety as possible ii given and clean grit, water and green food supplied the danger from stale ground will not lie nearly so great ai when these essential are ueglected. I find wheu you are trying to get 1 profit out of the fowls It Is a very good plan to keep a large old pot aud Into It put all your household scraps, such as potato peelings, meat bones. etc.. and boll all up and mix with middlings and barley meal In equal proportions. It furulshes them with a nice hot breakfast aud saves buying so much food, besides helping at this time of the year to bring them on to lay. A warm meal In the morning before you let your hens out Is the main tblug. and It Is very nice to feel there Is noth ing being wasted lu the home, as fowls will eat nearly everything. Another good plan Is to try to buy your pain In large quantities. It Is cheaper. II you cannot go In for fowls on a large scale, have them on a small oue, as they are most useful. A. V. Meerscb in Western Poultry Journal. Partridge Wyandottes. The Partridge a handsome fowl, possessing all the characteristics of the Wyandotte breed, but differing In color of plumage, In which particular they reproduce the coloring of the Partridge Coohlu. The Partridge Wyandotte layi larger eggs than auy of the other varl etles, aud they are browner lu the shell This can be accounted for by the fact that other blood has been Introduced to get the plumage, and the result la seen in the Increase In size aud the deeper color of the egg. The Introdue tlon of entirely fresh blood always tends to strengthen the egg organs, and as a result all new varieties will be found better layers than those breeds I that have been established many yei.rs Considerable skill is required In n at lng in order to get the birds to ccme true to type. Tbe cock should Lav a rose comb, fitting closely to the bead and the peak pointing dowuward to the neck; eyes hazel, with a nice brown ring round; face ai-d ear lobes red: beak dark, striped vlfh yellow; neck, hackles and saddle feathers a beautiful dark lemon color, w;th black down the center of each fi-uil.er. The shoulders should Ik.' dark red; v lng bars brown, edged with black; breast and thigh feathers black sr.. I brown; tail black, carried well beck; legs yellow, with four toes on each f jot. London Mail. Hat Ion Vol Fon-la. Corn alone due not form a g'Kxl food for laying lu-tis, for it tends tu the production of too much fat. U corn is allowed to form a large part of the ration, a large amount of work must be provided. This may be sup plied by scattering the feed deeply In litter, so that the fowls must scratch for It Wheat formB a better food than corn, but a mlxe1 ration Is the best. The fowls not only relish a mixed ra tion better, but urh a ration will be more completely digested and asshnl- lated than one composed of only one kind of food. A ration made up of corn, wheat, oats, barley, bran, shorts, clover or other green food, such as mangel wurzels, cabbage, etc., ground fresh bone an J fresh meat scrtips would when properly proportioned and varied from we?k to week )n excellent for egg production. Selecting a Pare I)r-d Male, In selecting a pure bred cockerel there are ceriain characteristics that should be looked tw. For instance, If you want to Increase the laying powers of any pure breed note carefully the comb on the hlrd you are about to a IU 1. . .... 1 t 7 , lu T r TOIDM laying pullets. A bird should be se lected that lias a good sized comb for the variety he represents, but this comb should be rather thin and fine In tex ture. Avoid a coarse grained, "beefy" comb, whatever breed you may find It on. Westorn Poultry Journal. Separate the t. If you make your nests in rows, side by side, have a solid partition between nests, for a sitting hen will steal every egg In reach of her and have her nest so full of her own ej-'gs and the stolen ones that it will be Impossible to cover them. Success With Poultry. Neither breed nor location nor capital invested nor mere hard work alone brings success in the poultry business. They must be combined with each other and with pure common sense. Congressman Hepburn's intimation that Congressman Cooper also is a liar is cruelly unjust. Mr. Cooper lacks the energy as well as the inclination for such legislative enterprise.
