And now comes Dr. Douglas Hyde in
sisting that the old original Irish lan
guage shall be recalled from antiquity
and made the vehicle for all the con
verse, speeches, orations and purposes
of communication between the peoples
of that nationality; and this, mind you
to the utter exclusion of the layman
who shall have no knowledge of the
cult. What the deuce does he expect
us to do for the humor, the fun, the
wit, the bulls and the brogue that have
kept the world laughing for a thousand
vears or more. If every jolly Irish
friend a man may have, and upon whom
he relies for a relishable bit of down
right fun, is to burst into dignified, un
intelligible Gaelic everj- time he is spok
en to, what is to be the fate of the lay
man who is thus deprived of his invar
iable resource for genuine fun? It is
a shame, and with all due respect to
the good doctor, we advise him to let
things go as they are, and permit the
world to have the old time pleasure of
regaling itself at the inexhaustible
fount of fun and blarney from which
.half the good things of life are drawn
If any aspiring Irishman enters this
office and dares to impose on this staff
with his original Celtic idioms and the
heathenish mother-tongue, however well
he may acquit himself otherwise, we'll
"trow him out" and cut his acquaint
ance until he comes to his senses and
resumes his brogue and blarney, and the
understandable lilt of keen and honest

THE POPULAR CHOICE.
The Democrats of Oregon are pecul
iarly indifferent to the law of the direct
primary which they, themselves, foist
ed upon the State. They are cooly re
pudiating the organic step they helped
to provide for best expression of
popular choice" and are reserving their
political action until the Republicans
who have faithfully observed the fulj
letter of the edict shall have named their
their candidates, in the hope they
may have an opportunity ot naming
more acceptable and easier elected as
pirants; they are doing more than this.
they are registering as Republicans with
a view of voting at the primaries for
the weakest possible Republican, thus
making it simpler for them to foist
their own candidates before the people
in their so-called conventions. They will
find they have chosen a coarse and re'
actionary program; the people are no
fools; they know the object of the law;
they know the scheme of the Democrats,
and thev know how to rebuke such
transparent and insulting overtures
The Republican majorities in Oregon
will be heavier, and Clatsop's will be
among the stiffest.

Tuesday, April 3rd, A. D. 1900, at the
hour of 2 o'clock p. m., at that certain
building on the south side of Commer
cial street being No. 355 in the City of
Astoria, in Clatsop county, Oregon, said
building being the building occupied by
the newspaper known as the Tyynen
meren Ranomat or Pacific Herald, offer
for sale and will sell at public auction
to the highest bidder for cash the entire
printing plant of said newspaper includ
ing type, form cases, galleys, one cylin
der printing press, dynamo, tables,
chairs, office furniture and every article
of personal property contained in said
building belonging to Victor Bergman,
or heretofore and on March 0, 1905,
owned by him.
This sale is by virtue of a certain
chattel mortgage executed by said Vic
tor Bergman in favor of E. Manula,
S. W. Panttaja, and Nels Bergman,
bearing date March 9, 1905, and record
ed in the office of the County Clerk of
Clatsop County on said date at page
583, Book E, records of chattel mort
gages for said county, and the com
mand of the mortgages endorsed
therein.
The conditions of said chattel mort
gage having been broken, and I will
sell the whole of said property or suf
ficient thereof - to satisfy the sum of
$400 with interest thereon at the rate
of eight per cent per annum from the
Dth day of March, 1905, and costs of
sale.
