SENTIMENT IN LANE COUNTY i Senator Fulton Inquiring of Residents i in Lane County Where 50,000 I a ft - n , , ur:k,ir.t-n ACirs nave ecru nuuiau, What They Desire. ASTORIA NEWS lilUKAl'. Wash ington. 1). C, Marvh 20. Senator Ful ton, of Oregon, has inaugurated a sys tematic effort to have local sentiment expressed regarding the relative value of forest reserve lands in every county of his -fate. For some time he has been receiving statements from various coun ties that land valuable for agriculture had been embraced within reserves. The entire Rogue River reserve, which lies in the Coast Range near the coast, is regarded by many resident of the coun ties where the withdrawal was made, as promising of development for agricul ture or livestock. To bring all such cases up in form permitting the residents of the state to express themselves. Senator Fulton has commenced with Lane county, where County Judge Chri-tinan says at last jO.OW acres of land more valuable for other than forestry purposes, h.is lieen withdrawn. The people of this county have been a-ked to set forth their vi.-ws fully, describing the lands they believe worth more for other purposes, givinj: the acreage and general phy-ii.il condition-. At the -auie time an e-tiinatc of the local people on the value of the land for timber is a-ked. When tiies- -tatemenTs have been lihd. they will be put t'C'cther. and pre--cnted to the Forestry iJureuu. for coin-paii-mi with the reports made by the forestry bureau agents at the time of crealiii'.' the n-enc-. If it i- found that the people of the i-o! 1 1 II I II 1 1 i t y differ. and that they are -troiiu'ly in favor ot 1 th- conclusion that, reserve laud vill prove of value in other u-c-, an effort j will be made to have siicli tract- ojicneil to private ownership. In writing a letter to Chief Kore-ter I'inchot on t hi- -object, the Senator explained that th- work was not ini mical to reserves, but merely to get local -eiitiment regarding which arc-is wei -uited exclusively lor fr---try and which would be worth uniiv in other u-e-. It is argued further that no land can be kept, with profit to the state in fore-try when it is alienable to agrieultur.il or live-toel: industries. Figure- on this point are -ubiiiitted. which tiow that the bct, yields to be ex pected from timber land i,itige from ten edit- to about ?l.."ii) a rear per acre. Comparing these with what, is yielded in -everal other indu-tjie-, the movement is justified. for the be-t interests of the -tale. .Mr, I'inchot has ,een requested to make a statement declaring the policy of the department regarding reserves, on what ba-is valuations are fixed, and other general i-on-ideratioiis. AYhen Mr. Pinchot's -tateineut has been received, the work in Oregon will be simplified, as it will require but a -hort time to get an expression of community sentiment which will enables any one to judge the re-iill. DEFENDS PRACTICE. President of Chicago Board of Trade Defend! Trading in Privileges. CHICAGO, March 20.- Vigorous de fense of the practice of trading in privi leges was made by President Walter Fitch, of the Chicago Hoard of Trade in an address last night at the monthly dinner of the board of tunic at the Bohemian Club. "Never shall the member, of the Chi cago Board of Trade deal in privileges in .Milwaukee, when they cannot in ( hic-ago," he declared. "Ill regald to the quotation- which are u-ed in the "bucket -hop-' it i- my contention and always ha-, that quo tations arc pei-oiial property a- much as a hor-e and carnage that I own and whoever infi ile.""- upon thi- personal can be meted to them. "In -pite ot the aiguineiit which i brought up that ale -ry carelc-s with our property, although it. may be news lo you, we have contracts with the telegraph companies which stipulate thai we have ab-olute light to accept or reject applications for quotations. "I believe our clearing house system i- old and inadequate and over margin system i- an absolute farce. In the last two year- we have had failures that have cost the public !,2,(Mi.0Mi and many of these were people who were under the board of trade cloak which they u-ed as a badge of honor and stability to induce people to deposit money with them. That is the kind of advertising we do not want. " We must do bu-ines- honestly. There aiv two people concerned in the in-olveneies among our own member- -first, the man who make, ihe debt and, -ecod the man who allow, him to make th - debt. When you conti ihute to these conditions by indiscriminate credits you are commit ing an otl'eii-e against that institution, and you know what the end ing i- a- well a- I do." MAGNATES ARRIVE.
