Paid Over The Coin. In spite of tho
fact that he alleged lie had paid $125
back to the man who had deposited
that amount with him, after robbing
Jddgc. Nate Join.-, ki-cpor of the county
bridge over the J-ewis and Clark river,
of that amount ami $125 bcsiJes, P. A.
Peterson, a saloon keeper on Astor
street, paid over the sum of $100 t
Jones iu payment -of what wns due.
Peterson was up before the Grand
Jury cterday and protested his inno
cence of any intinitonnl wrong. He
said that when the man who had rob
lnd Jones -gave him the money to keep
for him he gave him a receipt for it,
which was later found on the robber.
Peterson however claimed that the man
had wine back later and taken back the
money, but had omitted to give Peter
son tho receipt. Notwithstanding Peter
son's claims of having paid back the
money entrusted to his care, the grand
jury decided that he ihould pay Jones
for his loss, which Peterson finally did.

News Plant Sold. According to the
legal notices out in that behalf, there
was sold at the county court house
door, yesterday, it 2 o'clock in the af
ternoon, by Sheriff Thomas Linville, the
plant and fixtures of the Astoria News,

gether with costs, and this wa follow
ed by the bid of John Gratke, of the
Daily Dudget, in the sum of $500, this
proving the successful quotation in the
premises, there being no other offers.
The plant as advertised was therefore
sold to Mr. Gratke for that , amount.
Mir. Gratke was not prepared to say
just what he intended to do with the
acquisition.

To Erect Drydock. It is the inten
tion of the Cullender Navigation Com
iiny to begin the erection in the near
future of a small drydock or gridiron
for the accommodation of boats of mod
erate sire. The dry dock will be built
from Fourteenth street extending to
the driveway leading from Bond street,
and just north of the railroad track.
In the proposed plans there will be a
spur from the railroad track to the
drydock so that engines and similar
heavy things can be easily loaded or
unloaded from barge. The drydock
when built will be of great advantage
to Astoria, and it's completion will be
awaited with interest by shipping men,
and those who have occasion to use
such equipment. m.
Will Not Sign Ordinance. It is re
ported on good authority that Mayor
Wise has definitely decided not to sign
the new ordinince passed unanimously
on last Monday night by the city coun
cil, providing for the entering into a
contract with the Astoria Electric Com
pany, to light the city f6r five years.
According to the information, the May
or does not believe that such a long
term contract is advisable, as in his
opinion the city may in the near future
be able to operate and own it's own
plant. The Mayor is allow cd ten days
in which to sign the ordinance from
the passage by tho council. If Mayor
Wise does not sign the bill, the mat
ter can only be passed over his veto
by a two thirds vote of the council.
It ia considered probable that had the
council passed tho three year contract,
the mayor would have signed the,
measure.
