From many business house they bi.ve merit with liberal re sponse. A meeting was called yesterday at 2:30 o'clock of the committee at the Chamber of Commerce rooms, the full committee mul Mayor Surprenant being present. After- discussing the question every mcmls-r expressed himself that the effort to raise the required amount to give a guMl regatta was unavailing and on motjnn, it was decided to declare the regatta pit. The following statement wa unanimously adopted: Astoria, Or., July 25, 1005. To our fellow citizens; The honorable Mayor called a public meeting recently and at said meeting it wa declared that an emergency existed, inasmuch a thous and of stranger are within our state who ni-ed but to be attracted in order to become visitors and possibly and ulti mately, investor and taxpayers. Self interest would have prompted a refusal on our part to take up the labor devolving upon a successful regatta com mittee, but the urgent pleaa of the may or in behalf of the general welfare caused us to lay aside all personal con sideration and asaume the duties thus plainly imposed. We effected an organ, nation and declared to the public our solemn purpose to work energetically for the regatta, to guard the expendi tures and to pay all obligations Incur red by this committee -upon w-ritten order of the proper officers. In return w-c, tut asked reasonable subscription and friendly encouragement. Our ap peal met with enlhiiMastic response on the part of a nmnW of our people, but not sufficiently large to warrant an expenditure necessary for a successful celebration. We can not afford either to incur bills for which there is no money in sight nor to put up the balance our aetvea; neither do be care to get lip a one-horse affair. It is hojied that the town will awaken from the trance which has caused the Push Club t wte away and the re gatta to become a nightmare to all who are connected with it and that before another year Astoria will be the bust ling, hopeful city it deserves to lie. In conclusion w'e thank all w ho extended us their encouragement. Respectfully submitted. HF.RMAN WISE. Chairman. FRK1) JOHXSO.V, Secy. ALBERT Dl XBAR. Treaa. C. R. MORSE, K HAl'KE, THOMAS RYRIE, F. LARSEN'S DEATH CAUSES MUCH COMMENT Investigation May Follow Autopsy Over Body of Miss Elsie Larsen. Considerable furor has been occasioned in Portland by the death of Miss Elsie Larsen. the result, is is believed, of an operation performed ty a dental, epec- ialtist. Commenting editorially- on the operation the Telegram last night said: Dentistry is one profession; surgery is another. Just whv a dentist should consider himself called upon to attempt a surgical -.operation in no way related to' dentistry, as was done in the case of a young woman in this city, whose death has resulted, is not easy to understand. True, the specialist in this case had of ten performed similar operations with out fatal results, but that fact abates nothing of the truth that the job waa a job for a surgeon; one who not only understood how to perform that par ticular operation, but who understooa also the certain, the probable and are possible effects on an operation in any one part of the body upon any and all other parts. In the Portland case the result might have been the 'same if per formed by a surgeon, but the whole tragic occurrence emphasizes, neverthe less, the fact that dentistry ia dentistry, and surgery surgery.
