Long Island, seem but a step, but it
took the Rev. Edward Jame Holden

of the church. The service were mod
est, owing to the suicide a few day
ago, of Mrs. Pauline Keevil, wife of
the Rev. Charles J. Keevil, tlie former
pastor of the church.
The Rev. Mr. Holden began to study
for the ministry while a clerk in the
Standard Oil office. He devoted every
spare moment to study. He is only
twenty-seven years old, and ha a wife
and one child.
He passed the examination for the
Baptist ministry with high honors last
week. The examination wa held by
the ordaining council in the Hanson
Place Baptist Church, in Brooklyn.

Suicide by Gas.
New York, July 4. Crazy with gnef
over the. It of her nine.-year old
daughter Elsie, who died from diph
theria in tbe Willard Parker hospital on
Sunday last, Mrs. Mina Scheuter of o.
& 7th-st.. is believed to have killed
her younger child Annie, and attempted
suicide by gas, yesterday morning

Mrs. Annie Miller, the janitress of
the tenement house where the Scheuter
familv have lived for two months.

open. She knocked at the door, and

Cahill and Wagner entered the apart
mcnts by the fire escape and found
Mrs. Scheuter and little Annie lying
on the bed, with gas tube in their
mouths. The child was dead and the
mother unconscious. An ambulance
took the mother to Bellvue.
Elsie Scheuter was taken ill last Fri
day. but her mother delayed calling s
