ASTORIAN TO BE IMPROVED. Under a new regime the Atorian hopes to oiler the people a paper that will rank with the best dailies in the Pacific Northwest. Commencing Mon day, July 3, a seven-day service will be instituted. In the intervening iHriod many little improvement that will materially better the appearance of the paper will be noticed and it U intended that these shall continue until the A torian is brought to the highest iosi lib? state of efficiency. The Astorian pledge itself to make these improvements, not only because they will result in an increase of pat ronage; but because the city of Astoria is worthy of a wholly up-to-date and enterprising daily paper, comparing fa vorably with the foreign newspaper now enjoying the support of some of our resident. We see no reason why the Astorian should not have this additional patronage. To gain this end a manifestation of confidence in the city is deemed advisable. The Astorian is after a larger subscription list and is determined to obtain it. There are many channels which offer opportunity for improvement One by one, these will be carefully considered and the most effective means of better ing the paper adopted.. The inaugura tion of the Monday paper will mark the first step toward the new Astorian. This will lead to improvement in the telegraphic service, the increasing of the local staff, and ultimately, to the printing of a seven-column twelve page paper. And while these contemplated changes are such, they may appeal to skeptical persons as being fancied, they are only the beginning. A thorough sys tem of state correspondence Is to be or ganized. This special telegraphic ser vice will bring the Astorian to the front as news medium. Following, it is planned to publish a larger paper on Sundays, possibly twenty-four pages; the much coveted colored comic supple ment will be included in this. Not satisfied with its present allot ment of "owls" Portland starts iil advocacy for owl cars to accommo date them. First it was "toot" and now it is "hoot." We dinna ken. The Oregon Daily Journal. Docs the Journal predict he will soon 1' a "dead one;" "May C.et Peace Hen-." says a head in the Oregon Daily Journal, relative to Portland's invitation to the peace plenipotentiaries. Peace! and in Port land! This is "strange, indeed," with apologies to the venerable Mr. Scott. I FIRE PROTECTION. The necessity of establishing more efficient means of fire protection was fittingly demonstrated Saturday night, in the blaze which, for a time, threat ened to destroy the city. Consternation reigned, following the discovery of the fire and before the department was noti fied, the blaze gained considerable head way. At present, but two boxes are located in the business section, one at the cor ner of Exchange and Ninth streets and one in the vicinity of the Central Hotel. Had an alarm box been located at the corner of Commercial and Eleventh streets, an alarm could have lieen turned in immediately, and the conflict, accom panying the proniiscioiis telephone mes sages to the department head-quarters, avoided. The Astorian urges upon the Council the speedy installation of a "box at this comer. The people should feel deeply appre ciative of the excellent work accomplish ed by Fire-chief Foster and his men. A few minutes after the alarm was finally turned in, the department directed six streams upon the blaze. Excepting a l.riuf interval about 10 o'clock, at no time was the fire Iteyond the control of the fin-men. Thanks sire alio due to those who volunteered their aid in quenching the Haines. The Astorian urges upon the Common Council the speedy installation of more alarm boxes. Sam White, of Riverside, California, according to the Yreka Journal, has a boy born on February and. in addition, one who was born on Wash ington's birthday, one on Inauguration dav, two on All Fool's day. one on Thanksgiving dav and one on February 2. erround-hoe dav. White must be colored. Commenting upon the advocacy against the use of telephones by the Old German Baptist Brethren, the Sea side Signal says, "And that's right too. A more ungodly thing than the telephone has never been invented. It has corrupted every woman who has ever undertaken the use of it. Why, the very first word she utters is 'hell o! It is simply shocking." Modified to 'ha lo," "hell o" might be accepted by the German Baptists. "Seven dollars will enable the visitor to the Lwis and Clark fair to see every concession of the Trail 'say the dead head letter to the country Jake Press," quotes the Sherman County observer.
