Oswego, X. Y.. June 5. Driven almost to the point of insanity by numerous let ters threatening to kidnap or murder his daughter, B. J. Tonkin, a wealthy and prominent citizen, has anuounced the of fer of a reward of $50,000 for the dis covery of the person who has for two years been writing letters to him de. manding a large'sum of money or dire results. The offer of reward reveals story of months of haunting fear which have made life unbearable for the mem bers of the family. Mr. and Mrs. Tonkin had three daugh ters, ime, Virginia, uiea three vears ago. The shock affected the parents greatly. It is said the body was em balmed and kept in the house for nearly eight months when the authorities in terfered and it was burried. Soon aft er this eame the first letter demanding money or threatening harm to Rosamond. Since then the missives have arrived at frequent intervals. The child has been so strictly guarded that she has grown morse and sicklv. Mr. Tonkin showed the letter to th Oswego police, but no clew to the writei could be obtained. Private detectives were employed with no better results. With nerves shattered by the strain Mr. Tonkin took Rosamond to Xew York fix months ago where apartments were en gaged, but the letters followed Mrs. Ton kin and nunc detectives were eiij.-a-.Til They were unsuccessful as the others had been, and linally, broken in health an spiritless Tonkin returned to (Mvcgo, with the child. Armed detectives an coachmen always accompany Rosamond when she leaves the house. On May 27, near here, Cora Sweet. child, was dragged into a lonelv field bv a farm hand and murdered. The crime stirred the whole city, and the farm hand, who confessed, was protected with difficulty. The murder so alarmed Mr, and Mrs. Tonkin that they offered the reward in the belief that it would stimu late search for the letter writer. The last letter received demanded $50, 000, threatening the death of the daugh ter if it was refused. Xone of the let ters has told how or where the money was to be paid. that eastern transplanted oyster do spawn and cites as an instance where a Mr. Seaman, of Sunshine, found an oyster in its home in the shell which was seven and one-half inche long, six inches wide and two inches thick and weighed two pounds and one ounce, (lit out! The Tillamook Headlight is bemoan ing fate and is much grieved that the Imputation of Tillamook county is dc creasing. The nason assigned is, that many people are leaving the county lo calise they are unable to secure tmploy nient. Tillamook is one of the best dairing counties in the state, and all it needs is a railroad. Hood River, in Astern Oregon, has in creased during the last five year from 022 to over 2,000. Eugene City has in creased from 3,230 to nearly 6,000. The indications are that Tillamook county will be the ouly one in the atate that will show a decrease in population. OPPRESSED WEN Prominent Minister Preaches Sermon on Divorce Results. DIVORCE LAWS ARE ABUSED Neither the Law Nor the Church Make Manages and All the Law Can do is to Make a Clumsy Attempt to Protect Women From Designing Men. CHINOOK IS DRY. All the Saloons are Now Closed on Sun- Day to the Chinookites. There is weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth among the Chinook ites on account of the authorities elo ing all the saloons in that thriving burg on Sunday. The Willipa Harbor Pilot discussing the question, says: Prosecuting Attorney He wen return ed Thursday from Chinook whither he went to prosecute the saloon keepers of that place for violating the Sunday closing law. He informs the Pilot that complaints, sworn to by Rev. McWaten of Chinook, were filed with Justice J K. Dalton against Frank Gaither, Jul ius Jensen, Franz Jensen, and Agathon Pearson. This action was a surprise to the persons arrested and, as they wish ed time to consult with their attor neys, they were given until June 14 giving bonds in the meantime in the sum of 1100 each. The cases will be tried before Justice Dalton. Inasmuch as Mr. Hewen has inti mated, in an interview which appears in this issue, that his policy will be to show no partiulity in enforcing the law the sentiment manifested at Chinook will, in all probability, lie manifested at other points where the law is being vio lated. If Sunday closing is a good thing for Chinook, other communities will reason that it is a good thing for them and people generally want all the good things that are coining to them. Much lepends, however, on the result of the actions beirun in Chinook It may be that the saloon men there will decide to piietly close their places of business in future but, should they elect to fight the law, the case will attract widespread ittention and the final result in the ourts can only be guessed. In any vent it is worth while to know whether r not the law is valid and can Is- en rced. Must Have Been Crabs. The South Rend Journal, comment in;( pon the oyster business, is convinced Xew York, June .".- In a senium in the mrch of the Me-siah. Rev. Minot J. Savage ha- expressed a belief that oil a whole a large number of divorces at tlii present time are altogether to be wcl. oune. "They are," he said, "nearly always in the interet of oppressed women, giving them another opportunity for a free, sweet, wholesome life. There cases where the divorce laws are abused, but nc nearly ho many as the ministers of great many of our churches seem imagine. Law doe not make marriages. The church does not make marriages. Men and women, if they are ever married, marry themselves. All the law ran do is to make a clumsy attempt to protect all the church can do is to recognize and try to consecrate a fact which already exists. But if there is no marriaire, then it is descration to keep up the sham." CELEBRATE THE FOURTH. Committe Meet and Mak Arrange menta for th Celebration.
