Broadway crowds. He Is accused of
liavinc attempted to replenish his tor

was being shown a lot of fine stones.
A $1500 diamond brooch claimed by the
shopkeeper was found in his gloves.
With an Impressive aU and aristo
cratic rneln. Nearlo strolled .into the
shop and stated In French that he had
left his ancestral chatteau two days
ago , to make glad the heart of an
American heiress whose smiles he had
won on her trip abroad during the
winter. All of this was preliminary to
ths request that he b? shown some
thing superfine, as a gift fon the girl.
Nothing seemed quite good enough and
finally the "count" was conducted to
a burglar proof cags tn which one of
the best gems in the shop were exhib

chase a design for their setting and
asked a salesman to accompany him to
a prominent hotel wher. he had de
posited S10.000.
Apparently awaiting the salesman,
the "count" strolled languidly to the
street When the clerk reached the
door his customer had vanished. A
quick look at the Jewel casket showei
that one of the brooches had gone like
wise. Two on three clerks rushed into
the crowded street and luckily over
hauled Carlo four blocks distant slow
ly walking along Broadway. One of
them unceremoniously grasped him by
the collar and called him a thief. Carlo
shook him off easily and broke Into a
run. ' A crowd gathered at his heels
and be was soon halted by a 'mounted

Chicago, May 12. a dispatch to the
Record Herald fnom San Francisco,
says:
"The Norwegian consul here has re
celved an order for provisions to be
sent north on a whaling arctic explor
er, who sailed from Norway on June
17,1903, in an endeavor to find the
northwest passage. From the fact
that supplies are to be sent nwth by
the Pacific ocean, it is argued that thla
great quest of arctic explorers for
more than 400 years has been suc
cessful and that the explorer will soon
appear on the Pacific coast.
Capt Amundsen, who passed Green
