Reports Indicate a Large Increase in Foreign Immigration. New York. March JS. The spring rush of Immigration has almost swamped the government official at Ellis Island. In the last three days 18,000 Immigrants have reached th's port. Reports received from abroad Indi cate that the rush will continue to In crease during April and May, and it la feared that Ellis island will be taxed beyond is capacity. Demands for steerage passage are being made at nearly every port of Immigrant em barkation. i The steerage capacity on all of the large steamship lines al ready Is booked many weeks ahead and the companies are compelled to put on extra steamers to meet the Euro pean exodus. Over 7000 Hebrews have reached here since the first of the Georg Whitehead Sick. New York, March 21 Appraiser of the Port George Whitehead, who hut been ill 10 days, is reported today much worse and is now In a critical condi tion. He is suffering from erysipelas. The announced price l $23, Pittsburg, which would Indicate an entirely favorable view of steel mar ket prospects for the coming year. Merchant furnaces have made fur ther pig Iron sales to steel companies In the week. Out of 40,000 tons of Bes semer and basic Iron sold at $15.50 at valley furnaces a western Pennsylva nia steel company took 25,000 ton. A Youngstown Interest has bought 65,000 tons of Bessemer Iron that will be con verted and rolled into skelp for It at the valley steel works. On behalf of the National Tbe Company an inquiry for Bessemer Iron Is up. The foundry pig iron ha not been particularly interesting during the week. The market Is still at $13.50 for No. 2, as It has been for weeks, though one leading company haa put It quo nit Ion at $13.75. for further forward deliveries.
