SCHERNECKAU, ' Directors. most confirmed smokers, know what Is the difference between Turkish and Virginia tobaccos! " The smoker, ot course, can tell you which Is which at the first whiff; but if you ask ti'm whatj ' the original distinction Is beiween the two he will tell you that one comes ' from f urkey anil th other from the states. He Is wrong. Toil tould grow Turkish and Virginian tobaccos Jit tn same field, for they are merely twd ' different varleflea of the same plant. Turkish Is the leaf of "Nlcotiana Rus tlca," while Virginian is NIcotlna Au gustipolla." Of course, the two are often blended by tobacconists. Again, what constitutes the differ ence between "strong and "mild" to baccos? It is simple enough. The strong product Is so manufactured that It burns badly or, perhaps one should say, slowly the result being that the contained nicotine Is distilled In an unaltered state. Mild tobaccos ara those which burn well, and thus their contained nicotine is consumed or de composed, with the result that a less narcotic smoke Is formed. We often bear cheap cigars spoken of as "cabbage leaves." and doubtless many people believe that these are actually adulterated with other sub stances than tobacco. Often in such a weed the outside wrapper is noticed to be patched with pale green and this fact is held proof of the cabbage leaf libel. The piece of greenish leaf is real tobacco which has been plucked un ripe, or not properly cured. It Is only to be found In thin, poor leaf. . . There Is an old standing tradition that cigars with spots on them are better than others. A smart American grower has invented a machine for sprinkling growing tobacco with a so lution of potash to produce these spots. . It need hardly be said that the whole idea is an absolute delusion. Tobacco for cigarette making is sprinkled with water before use. A London tobacco manufacturer has recently made the odd discovery that the water from a well known petrifying spring used for this purpose gives the resulting cigar-. ettes a most agreeable flavor, and cigar- ettes so manufactured are soon to be on the market 8TOCK WAS WELL WATERED. P. P. & N. Co. Caught Suckers If Not Salmon. West Coast Trade: The past two or three seasons have not produced enough salmon in Puget sound to Justify the water employed in the packing indus try. With the proposed winding up of the affairs of the Pacific Packing & Navigation .Company by the receiver it is stated that the assets of the concern will aggregate about 33,000,000. The capitalization was $25,000,000, or about eight times the amount of the invest ment Indicating that there were other fish beside salmon caught in this the only real local experience with indus trial combination methods. DIVIDENDS LARGER. Nearly Three Millions Greater Than a Year Ago. New York, Sept 29. October divi dends thus far made by Industrial cor porations show an increase in the total of about $2,800,000 over last year. This increase Is shown despite the fact that two dividends amounting to $800,000, which figured in the October, 1903, list, are now missing. What Is Life?
