NEWELL D WIGHT HILLI8 Lectures to astorians Noted Brooklyn Scholar Addresses AudiWc at First Presbyterian Chutth on History of England. The lecture of Dr. Newell Dwlght Hlllls, pastor of Plymouth church, Brooklyn, N. Y., at the Presbyterian church last evening, was delivered to large and appreciative audience, and long before the doctor appeared the seating capacity of the church was taxed to its utmost Dr. Hlllls' sub Ject was "Oliver Cromwell.'1 After an organ offerntory and a solo by Miss Hobson, rendered In her usual charming manner, Rev. Herbert Hop kins Brown, pastor of the Presbyterian church, Introduced United States Sen ator Fulton, who made a short address on his recollections of past years and the friendship of Dr. Hlllls, with whom he had been a schoolboy. The senator then presented Dr. Hlllls, who pref aced his lecture with a reply to the remarks of Senator Fulton. A more masterful and Instructive lecture than that delivered by Dr. Hlllls was never before heard J n As toria. The speaker showed from the beginning his wonderful familiarity with English history and held his audi ence spellbound for an hour and a half until the close. Dr. Hlllls, while taking "Oliver CromwelH for his subject did not stick closely to the relation of that statesman to the progress of England, but dealt quite generally with the 1m portant events that have transpired in British history. Dr. Hlllls Is not only a brilliant elo cutlonlst, but a man of rare personal magnetism, and his address will long be remembered by those Astorlans who were fortunate enough last evening to have found seats at the. Presbyterian church. Dr. and Mrs. Hlllls will be the guests of Senator and Mrs. Fulton during the day and wilt be shown several points of interest near the city. READS IN THE DARK. "It was ghastly," said the undertaker, "As we returned to our cabs from the cemetery In the black darkness of the evening, the man read out loud to his wife, the same as if it had been day light "I sat opposite bim. It was intense ly dark. I could see the man's face, a vague wniteness, ana l couia see me book he held on his knee. Everything else pitch black. And mumble, mum ble went his voice. He read fluently, Cold shivers ran up and down my spine. Finally I interrupted. "'Pardon me,' I said, 'I am the un dertaker. Would you mind telling me If you really read in a light like this "'I certainly can said he. "I can see more clearly in this darkness than in the sunlight' "Then he explained the matter to me. He said men every now ana men were born with cat eyes that worked better by night than by. day. He said Julius Caesar had been one of these in. Caesar had been able to read in the dark up to the age of 23; then the gift had left him. Joseph Scallger had also had the glfe. He said all pure albinos saw clearly in the dark, but in the sunlight their eyes grew dim and puinful. "Then the cab stopped and we got out As the man passed under the arc lamp, I saw that his hair and his eye brows and his skin were white and horrible, and his eyes were pinker than coral. I had never seen a albino so perfect." RARE CHANCE FOR SOMEBODY Petite Kentucky Girl of 194 Pounds Looking for Her Ideal. (Portland Telegram: That the duties and responsibilities of his office are of great variety, Mayor Williams has been forced 'to realize on many occasions, but today for the first time he has been asked to serve as a matrimonial agent This morning he received a letter from a young lady in Louisville, Ky., who Wishes to secure his services in get ting her a husband, one which will correspond to her Ideals, and which she has thus far been unable to find in her own state. Whether he will appeal to the civil service commission and ask It to hold a special examination of the eligible young men of the city for the purpose of giving her a list of those who might answer the description sent, or will se lect some favorite young man among his own acquaintances. Is as yet a matter of doubt But the mayor seems to think that Portland could supply the young lady, and it is probable he will give her as nearly as possible the Information ahe desires.
