COLUMBIA IS BACK AGAIN 0. R. & N. Steamship Arrives After Having Been Laid Up for Extensive Repairs. IS NOW BURNING CRUDE OIL Brought All the Freight She Could Carry and Large Nuru . ber of Paasenjrers Other Marine News. The deep whistle of the O. R. A N. steamship Columbia. o familiar to Astorlans, sounded along the river front yesterday. The Columbia had Just arrived from San Francisco and her whistle was blown more than usually In celebration of her return to her run out of San Francisco. She brought all the freight she could well carry and had one of the largest pas- senger lists that has come north for months. The Columbia had been oft the San Francisco run for about four months. She was laid up at San Francisco for a thorough overhauling, and after be ing placed on the dock It was decided tn iniitull nll-hiirnlnff annaratua. This necessitated further delay and thep- nteamshln was three weeks lae In getting back Into the service. She 01ney looks as spick and span as a new boat and Is In shape to handle the heavy traffic of the summer months. For some time the Oregon was on In the Columbia's place, but a week ago went to Seattle to engage In the Nome trade. The Nome City then was sub stituted, but made only one trip for the Columbia. Now the Nome City must find other means of earning divi dends for her owners. The Columbia had a large quantity of freight for Astoria and was at the dock here for two or three hours. Her passengers were enabled to come ashore and look around the city, and many of them vlHlted the canneries during the afternon. Late In the aft ernoon the Columbia left up the river, compositors have difficulty In wrest ling with It The contractions are as a rule understood; but the other even Ing sub-editors 'and compositors alike were "floored." for In a report of a sermon made by this particular Jour nalist there was this "tu." Solutions were sought In vain, so the writer had to be seen In order that an explanation might be got. -What's thiatu'?" asked the chltf sub-editor. ASTORIA Will Take Place of Pulitzer While Latter Is Being Overhauled. The pilot schooner San Jose, the property of the state of Oregon, was yesterday taken from her berth at the O. R. & N. dock around Smith Point .where she will be repaired. The re pairs to .the schooner will be made under the direction of Captain Camp bell, chairman of the board of pilot commissioners. Her bottom will be cleaned and new paint will give her a more attractive appearance. The San Jose will, during the com ing summer, be placed In service while the Joseph Pulitzer Is being overhauled. The Pulitzer has been In service all winter and has seen much hard weath er. When shipping Is quiet the Pulitzer will be laid off. She will be taken to Portland and there placed In the dry dock, where her bottom will be cleaned and painted and other repairs made. It Is likely the San Jose will come off the ways within a short time and that the Pulitzer will go Into service Immediately. Total 1038 After all the registrations were In the lists were checked and the names rearranged In those eases where vot ers had moved from one precinct to another. This work was quite ex tensive every name on the rolls being checked off. The books are now in shape to go to the Judges of election. Estimates of the number of people who have not registered vary, but the belief Is general that the city will cast a much greater vote than 1617. The country has registered fully, and It Is nrobable the vote will fall below the registration. The vote of the city will depend largely upon the supply 01 nsn around election day. If fish are plentl- ful, the fishermen will remain out on the river, while If the supply is poor they will exercise their elective fran- chlse.
