Ml - Chicago, 111. New York, May 12. April had a month of heavy production in pig iron and that more particularly on the part of the steel companies gays the Iron A ge. The output of coke and anthracite pig iron was 1, 553,706 tons in April, as compared with 1,447,065 tons in March. The steel companies are responsible for the trreater part of this increase the product having risen from 502,. 996 tons in January to 974,UUb tons in April, leaving for the out nide merchant' furnaces 579,700 tons in April. Southern furnaces show practically no change and the east cm stocks have accumulated a lit tle. The volume of new business which is coming to pig iron makers has been decidedly light of late and the markets are showing a weaken ing tendency. The foundries do not seem to be securing much new tonnage. In nearly all lines of finished iron and steel the current demand is light and buyers are acting very conservatively. Speaking generally the trade seems to be drifting rapidly into the conviction that there will be a quiet summer. SLEPT WITH DEAD MAN. "The rumor that Mr. Bancroft is preparing to resign his position is absolutely without foundation," gaid Mrs. Bancroft this morning " There is no more iiUth in it thai there was in the rumor that be at tempted to injure himself when th accident occurred' last Friday m which he cut his foot while chop ping wood. He has never mentioned any thing of the kind to me and I am sure that if he intended taking such action he would have talked with me about it. He is still confined to his room and is not able to make the statement himself, but it's too ridiculous to deny." Portland Journal. John Nemotz, an old tamnle maker, was found dead in bed on Wednesday morning with a bullet wound in his heart. He is sup posed to have committed suicide some time Tuesday afternoon. His lodgings were in an old room off! the Columbia hotel, 226 Columbia street. Nemetr body was louna this morning by John Stevenson, who occupied a bed in the same room. ' Stevenson, who has roomed with Nemetz for some time, did not re turn to his lodgings until late last night. Wearied from his day's la bors, Stevenson quickly undressed without lighting a lamp. . He saw Nemetz lying on the bed, but sup posed that the old man was drunk and so did not bother him. As the men occupied separate beds, Stevenson did not approach his roommate last night close enough to see the blood-stained cov erings nor the gaping wound in the dead man's breast. But this morn ing a ghastly sight met Stevenson's eyes. Wrapped in bed-coverings that were saturated in his own blood lay Nemetz cold in death. Rushing out of the room, Steven son met Patrolman Daniel Con note is penned in the Bohemian lan- cide. Patrolman Connors at once went to the room and immediately notified Coroner Finley. Connors found a note that Nemetz is sup posed to have written before firing trio shot, thnt ended his life. The not is penned in the Bohemian laa guage. Nemetz was born at Wallenic, Bohemia, in 1845.
