Even at the very opening of the great Louisiana Pudchase exposition the energetic people of Portland, Ore do not propone to -have It forgotten that theer will Boon be "another great fair for tho consideration of Ameri cana, and especially the Americana of the west. It la promised that the Lew la and Clark exposition In 1905 will lose nothing by following so closely on the heels of the St Loula fair, espe cially aa the Portland snow win in large measure be devoted to a field which la peculiarly He own. St. Loula may be said to be one gate way of the vast empire which and CWrk opened to the world, and Portland Is another. So vast was the territory covered by these Intrepid ex plorers on their voyage up the Mis souri and down the Columbia, that not one, but many expositions will be needed to fully exploit the resources of the great domain they threw open, to civilisation. The Portland exposition will be not able chiefly Ifi that It will draw the attention of the world to the possi bilities of the expansloa of American trade with the orient. For yeara far sighted men like J. J. Hill and othei promoters of railway and ateamshir. lines, have realised the possibilities oi thla trade, but It cannot be said that the country In general haa been fully alive to the real significance of out Pacific porta. The exposition at Port land will do more to open the eyes o: the American public to the advantages and possibilities of oriental trade than j yeara oi auvcmoiim iv"" channels. If for no other reason than this one bit of educational Influence, the Lewis and Clark exposition will be worthy ol generous support. Those persons who believe noth i ing but what they can see, are like ly to have very short creeds, Thos who credit nothing which they can not understand, make their ignor ance the measure of their faith. It is related that Louis XIV., of Prance, sent an ambassador to th king of Siara, who told that mon arch that in France the cold war so intense at times that men coulc walk upon the water, which some times became firm enough to beat up an elephant. The thing seemet so absurd, so contrary to all ex penenec and observation, so utter ly impossible, that the king tool the story for an insult, and threat ened the ambassador with instan' death. He knew too much to b- deceived by such stories--in Siam water never became hard! There is an account of an In dian who was sent by his tribe tc Washington, and on his return, while relating the wonderful things he had observed, he declared that he had seen the white people faster: a great ball to a canoe, and so rise into the clouds and travel through the heavens. This story, so ab surd, so unreasonable, so contrary to all experience, was at once pro nounced impossible, and a young warrior instantly levelled his riff and shot the Indian dead, regard ing him as too great a liar to ! allowed to live. At the beginning of the nine teenth century, the mart who had declared it possible to print 40,00C newspapers in an hour on a singlt press; or to travel over the country at the rate of a mile in a minute or to send a message or ask a ques tion across the Atlantic ocean and receive an answer within an hour'r time, would very likely have beer considered a lunatic or a liar; anc yet all these things come within the scope of our observation today The impossibilities of the ' bygone years have become the common oc currences of the present time; and if men are so ignorant of their own Dowers that they would a few years since have counted a man ft. liar for declaring what they them selves are believing and doing to day, what shall we say of those who presume to limit the Holy One of Israel, and deny the power of God, the Creator of the world t-Parish Visitor. and government, vice and sin, and whatsoever is useful in this life and that which is to come. The Christian young people of the land have lately reecived en couragement in their efforts ar making the world better from an unexpected source. It is no lea than testimony as to their effective ness from the leaders of the liquor interests, who fear the pious young people of the nation as the most ef fective enemies of the curse of drunkenness. At a recent meeting of the Brewi era' Association of Ohio its presb dent began his speech with the fol lowing words: "We have nothing to fear as an organization from the republics party, because we have enough mei in that party to control our inter ests. We have nothing to fear from the democratic party, because we have enough men in that party to control our interests. We have nothing to fear from the prohi bition party, because it has not be come a great factor in our political life, but," said the president, hold ing up a small placard with the program of the Christian Endeavor convention, being held in the ad joining city, "we have to fear these Christian young people's organizations." A letter issued by the Liquor Dealers' Association of Oregoil says, referring to the proposed lo cal option measure, "every Ep worth Leaguer and Christian En. deavorer will be sure to vote for it," and warns the faithful to work against them and others t make sure of the defeat of bear option.
