According to the story printed by the Portland Journal, Captain Pritchard entered Into a dick er with sailor boarding house runners to entice seven seamen from the ship, paying the crimps $144 for the service. Larry Sullivan Is said -to have been at the other end of the transaction. The agents at Portland declined to pay tm? money and the matter was re ported to the owners. Among other pointed statements the owners say that they ore astonished at the action of Captain Prltchard. and the only conclusion which can be surmised for his entering Into such "a contemptible transaction" is that he and the crimps participated In the plunder. They state that they wrote Captain Pritchard a letter which he received upon his arrival at Astoria instructing him to do his best toward inducing the members of the crew to remain with the ship. They further state that they exceedingly regret that Captain pritchard had sufficient money to pay the crimps, as they would have preferred that the latter should have libeled the vessel. In that event, the owners say, they would have fought the case through every court to the supreme court at Washing j ton before they would have allowed the captain to pay such an Illegal charge. The owners further deny that Cap tain Pritchard ever wrote them a sing le word regarding his crew neither has he given them any explanation of his conduct The local agents of the ves sel are complimented for the firm stand they took in refusing to pay the bill. The letter condenyis both the cap tain and the crimps In the strongest J terms, and greatly deplores that It is possible for such a condition of affairs to exist. Shipping men who have been made acquainted with the contents of tne letter say It Is certain that the captain will lose his position on the Glenesslin as soon as it can be arrang ed to supercede him with a new maa ter.
