In the ourt of special sessions, held at the town hall, Jamaica, yesterday, John and Ellen O'Grady of Ninth avenue, Long Island City, charged with neglecting their five small children arid allowing the eldest child to go out on the street and beg. were placed on trial. It was shown that both the defend ants were addicted to liquor and no care was taken of the children by them, although John O'Grady s ore that he was a lineman and earned 119 a week. They were convicted and sen tenced to the Kings county peniuntlary for three months each, Mrs. O'Grady taking her J-months-old infant with bur. A striking illustration of the way that the late William C Whitney could read men is said t9 be found In his first meeting with H, H. Vreeland, the pres ident of the Metropolitan Street Rail road Company. Mr. Whitney was mak ing a tour of Inspection of the Putnam division of the New Tork Central Railroad. Several other Inspectors of the road were In the party. When Mr. Whitney asked his fellow passengers" for details concerning the operation of the road, the number of trains, the average passenger business, they al most always answered: "Dunno." ' "How can I get this Information T' "Ask Vreeland." replied one. , Vreeland waa the conductor, a tall, raw-boned man, who had Just passed through the car. "I'd like to see 'Vreeland." said Mr. Whitney, and Mr. Vreeland was sent for.
