H. .Barker, a leading resident and property iwner or mat section, says that it is much In crrer; that the ex pens of building the street was borne, not by the city, but by the Interested property holders; and that the only renson for desiring that the work be deferred Is that it may bo hurried through when It is begun. "Ten yeara ago last September," said Mr. Barker, "the work of building the street was begun and it was not com' pleted until spring. In the meantime the street was well nigh Impassible The same condition confronts us now only they are worse. There are six houses tht will have to be moved JO feet back, and legal preliminaries must be gone through with, before the work can even be started, which wilt be six weeks. Then the street win be torn P and will remain in a wretched con dition during the winter, making it impassible for 150 school children that use the thoroughfare. We want noth Ing to occur that will hinder the opera tlon of the mill, but are anxious for conditions that win promote the Inter ests of the business, and an impassible street is certainly not one of them Let the avenue be Improved, but let the Improvement be begun at the time of year when It can be completed to the best interests of all concerned." : ; Asks the View Of Legislators . In fear of fur ther drastic legislation, following that cf last winter when the license fees In this state were advanced greatly, the central rganization of the New York City Wine, Liquor and Beer Dealers Association has adopted resolutions ap proving the defense fund plan for mulated at the recent liquor dealers national convention and has fixed New York state's contribution at $750,000. It was announced that this money is to be ra'sed by a tax label to be put on every package of liquor and barrel, of beer, but some of the dealers said the label may not be used. They stated that the money can be raised by regular assessment upon each saloon keeper. In Manhattan alone there are 8000 members of the associa tion in good standing. If every state represented In the National Association takes similar action the, defense fund of the liquor dealers, at this rate, will approximate $5,000,000. Christmas novelties now coming Hi.
