Our wlt-or-otb.erw1se contemporary . the New York American, almost aV ways hai l surplus of advice tucked away somewhere about Its person that It la pleased to let out upon a benight ed and groping world on the slightest provocation. "Too often," It says, as It note the commencement periods approaching close, "the Influence of the college is un democratic. It gives to fools the sense of belonging to a superior caste. The kind of an aristocrat that real educa tion makes never a snob. Don't prldo yourtself on your degree, young roan! Res'st the temptation to re gard yo'ir degree aa a patent of nobil ity. That notion betrays a mind too small to receive education, which when genuine gives a ma& the use of his trains. Use them It you have them. Don't pride yourself on belonging to a class. Don't be a prig. Be an Am erican." V -.-.' ; All sensible enough tn a tray, says the New York Commercial, but the ad vice appears to be predicated largely on , a vague notion that the college student exists In an environment and amid In fluences that set him apart from the general run of the boys and the young men of today. Time was wlen the cloister life of the college was some thing different from that of W out side world when Its traditions and practices n3ounjd caste and too of ten bred prtgs and nincompoops. ' But all that Is past tad gone, " The Am?rlcin -.ollege life of today is about as democratic as It well could be. A boy finds his real level there a little bit Quicker than he could on the outside. If there is any sham or pre tention or other foolishness about him be is given absolutely no peace until he purges himself of it or has it kicked and cuftel and knocked out of him., And as to the . "sheepskin" why, what college graduate, nowadays, ever sees It after he takes it home and shows it to the "governor" as a sort of warehouse receipt for the goods? What one ever tMnks of It again? Our learned contemporary's advice sounds like the echo of a pulpit note from out of the forties or early fifties.. During the year Just closing, Chicago university bus received, through gifts paid, a total of J!,M0.0t,T$, and m the same periol has secured promises of gifts to come aggregating fi.H9.S5, .. Either of these sums Is consider ably in excess of the annual resources of any one of the state universities In the northwest which have been hereto fore regarded, by their promoters at least, as In competition with the Chi cago Institution, says the Butte Inter- Mountain, . Common sense as well as consider .ittons of economy will suggest that there be an end to the unequal and use- hs rivalry and thaw the superior po sition and advantages gained by Chi cago university be conceded and made 'o profit the state colleges in the sur rounding territory Instead of serving as n Incentive to envious and unjust criticism, whk-h can only impede the magnificent work Inaugurated at Chi' cago, without benefit to anybody. The management of Chicago university makes this desirable change In con ditions comparatively easy by emph siring research rather than undergrad uate study aa the chief object of Its work. . , No state university can keep pace with the Chicago educational enter prise for the one sufficient reason that the citUens of no state will consent to be taxed to maintain rivalry with such generous private endowments as have been gathered in support of Chicago's university, especially to no better end than the duplication of equipment sad talent for advanced educational work within a territory which properly should constitute one field for work of this character, Michigan, Wiscon sin, Iowa, Minnesota, and other well established universities in the middle west will lose nothing in character and must gain in attendance by recognli ing the wider evope and different char acter of the work of the Chicago instl tution, and by utilising the advantages it offers Instead of seeking to combat and lessen its Influence and usefulness. To assume, as the practice has been in some of these states, thatknowledge provided by Individual munificence Is dangerous to the public and that the state should establish a monopoly in the good work because private gener osity presents dangerous competition with state colleges, is quite as absurd as it would be for Montana to seek to disparage established colleges offer ing extraordinary advantages to stu dents, or to abandon the excellent work begun at Missoula, merely because the comparative newness of her own uni versity and the undeveloped state of her great resources does not permit her to offer equal opportunities , to her young men and women at home.
