By reason of the probuble change In the currency standard in Mexico eon alterable anxiety Is felt concerning the effect the proposed change may have on American Interests, and to supply Information on the subject the treasury bureau of statistics has compiled an elaborate report on the trade relations of the two countries. It appears thst with no other people has our trade in creased more rapidly in recent years, and prospects are excellent for a larger Increase in the Immediate future. A summary of the report says that while our exports to Mexico in 1891 amounted to only $15,000,000 they will be found to have exceeded $40,000,000 last year; and our imports from Mexico, which were S,000,000 in 1891, w.ere about $41,000000 In 190. Concerning the trad? of the two coun- - trie the report states that Mexico is the one country with which our lm- ports and exports balance. To Can ada, that other adjatent country, we sell twice as much as the value of our purchases from it. Our imports from the Central American countries are 50 percent more than mr exports to those countries. From the West Indies our imports are nearly twice as great in value as our exports to them. From I South America our imports are nearly three times as great as the value of our exports to them, nnd from Asia our im ports are more than double our exports to that part of the world. To Europe we export nearly three times as much as we Import from that continent. In the case of Mexico, however, our ex ports at present just equal our imports, the total value of the exports from the United States to Mexico Jn the 11 months ending with November, 1903, being $38,124,159. and our imports from Mexico during the same period $3S,71I, 061. The rapid increase of trade with the United States is giving us a prestige in her markets with which no other na tion can compare. That is due part ly to our contiguity to Mexico and parjly to the large interests which Americans have In the country. It is stated that fully $400,000,000 of Ameri can capital is invested in Mexico, and that of course is a strong factor in our favor. Moreover, railroad building Is progressing rapidly. There are now upward of 9000 miles of railway in op eration, and they enibie us to Tet our goods readily to the interior markets. It is to be regretted that an iually good showing cannot be made of our trade with other countries to the south of us, but it seems we are making very little progress in any of them. The treasury bureau report") that to the Central American states our exports In 1S90 were $5,296,478. and in 1902 $6,322, 685; to South America our exports in 1890 were $38,752,14, in 1902 $38,043,617; to the West Indies our exports in 1890 were $U3,;,222, in 1902 $43,632,951; while to Mexico our exports In 1890 were $13,-' 285,287, in 1902 $39,873,606, and in the cal endar year 1902 over $40,000,000. In a New York Jail there is a man who hud a scheme. It whs a pretty good scheme, if consideration of the moral aspect could be waived, says the Ledger. An advertisement set forth that for legal settlement of an estate it wc.h neuissary that a beautiful young woman be married before June. The groom hud to be a "respectable gentle man." Just to expedlate matters photograph of the young lady would be sent for $1. . Upon the accepted gentleman there was to be settled ttt once JfiOOO. He was not to know nor to molest the wife, but to get a divorce with all possible speed, and the mo inent he could show papers the "estate' was to shove Into his palm a certified check for $15,000. With such bait as this the "respectable" were caught by the hundreds. The circumstance confirms the time honored theory that fools are not all dead yet. The "mar riage" as portrayed In the alluring ad vertisement would hot have been a inurrlage at all and would not have been recognized in any court. Moreover, . the charming young girl with $20,000 to give to a husband does not have to have recourse to the advertising col- a umns. She is more apt to have to hire a body .ruurd to keep suitors away. The happiest solution of this particular matter would be to send the swindler to prison for a long term, Just on the principal that he Is one of the social parasites that ire annoying, and not especially for the protection of the class of suckers who would ante tn the sort of game he has been playing. They do not deserve any sympathy, ana are too silly to learn anything. Had they not s'Vin their money to this fellow they would have given it to somebody else on a wager as to the location or a pea under a certain shell. Of course the resp.c;able are occasionally swin dled, but not by such a bungling nnd palpably criminal device as the one J under consideration. If for no other reason than that he Is a young man. C W. Fulton should be , elected to the United States senate. He if 49 years of age, and has many jcars before him. If he is elected at this session of the legislature, he will rncke a record that will insure his re-election, and will thus command import ant committee positions. Oregon is a very small state so far as population is concerned, yet there is no valid reas. on why it should not secure the stand ing it enjoyed in the senate when Mes srs. Dolph and Mitchell represented its interests. In eastern states, notably Missouri and Massachusetts, senators are elected because of their worth, and are re-elected as long as they can be prevailed upon to accept the honor. Senator Vest of Missouri retire oon after a term of 24 years in the senate. Mr. Vest is a democrat and represented the minority party in late congresses. but his standing was an Important oae and by virtue of his long service he was entitled to the highest committee places. Senator Hoar has been in the senate for many years, and, "anti" that he Is, his state will return htm as long as his health will permit him to accept the senatorship. Senator Vest retires be cause of ill health. It is the duty of ev ery state to elect young men to the sen ate and to keep them there as long as they perform their duties satisfactorily. Senator Fulton enjoys the advantage of youth and ability, and the Interests of Oregon demand his election. That the contest should have '.ontinued for two weeks does not sjieak well for the In telligence of Oregon's legislature, al though it is gratifying to note that Mr. Fulton's supporters remain steadfastly with him. His election is Imperative and should be brought about at an early date. In view of the terrible railroad accl dents that have occurred of late, it Is not surprising, perhaps, that President Roosevelt, on his return to Washington from Canton, should have gone for ward to the locomotive and shaken hands with the engineer and fireman.
