The Cnited States wii'. have four years hence the third navy of thi wtrld. That Is the forecast of tiiat high and Impartial authority "The German Naval Year Book" for 12. The estimate is In a measure specu- lauve, oui h nan, oa me wuu.e, a uu- fisnenwn hw lmt j, ., nls0 stantlal basis. It rests in the reason- brollRht thousands of visitors to the enable supposition that existing pro- .,itJ. Thls y?ar hundreJa pf fisher. gramme of construction are to be m, ,eft immediately after the season fulfilled. There Is every reason to for mher pacing joints, nnd aupiwee they will be. They cannot be ,he Kws of ,rade has Kvn .y Mt materinlly enlarged In that time, for The gatta is an event of great im thc reason that it takes several years jrta to Asor!a and the benefits to complete a battleship. Ian and Japanese; an order quite sa tisfactory, thus far, to this country. To come to details: Great Britain will have 57 battleships, of T63.S50 tons, i and 7ft large cruisers, of t4S.4W tons, an array of fighting strength unique J in the naval history of the world. I France will stand second, with 32 bat tleships, of S49.720 tons, and 28 cruiser, of 243 171 tons. Passing by the Vnited . States for the moment, Russia will - come fourth with 25 battleships, of 247,241 tons, and 18 cruisers, of l1, tons. Thua it Is to be seen that Grat Britain will have as many battleships as France and Russia put together. But the tonnage of her battleships will exceed that of theirs by 168.6S9, an amount equal to a dozen first-class battleships, giving her a tremendous preponderance over their united -navies in weight and strength. She will have 52 battleships of more than 10, ' 000 tons each, while France and Rus sia will , have only 42 such, and the god of naval warfare is on the side .of the heavier ships. Now let us see about our own na vy, as it will be at that time. It will have 20 battleships, of 248,294 tons, and 1 cruisers, of 176,155 tons. That falls far short of Great Britain's of France's but it considerably passes Russia's strength. For while in number of bat tleships we have only 20 to her 25, of those of more than 10.000 tons we shall v have 19 to her 19, and out tofiil ton nage will exceed hers by more than 1000. We shall have only IS cruisers to her 18, but our 16 will outweigh her 18 by 75,549 tons, and 13 of ours will be armored or protected, to only five of hers. There can be no doubt then, that, despite her numerical superior ltyr our navy will be considerably the stronger. Grmany will have a navy closely ap- JOB niLNTlMi IIMTJILW EDWARD PHICR, VNSCR First-Class U p-t c-D a t e Work I'NIOS I.Al.OK ONLY "I luv a rooster for lew things one Iz the krow thut it in him, and the other iz Uie purs that air on him to buk tip his krow with." Italy will remain sway down In the sixth place, with only 15 battleship, of 1S9.207 tons, and 6 cruisers all pro tected, of SS.S13 tons. Japan will be seventh, with 7 battleships, of K.501 tons, and t cruisers, all protected, of 5S.TT6 tons a small but powerful na vy, and one capable of giving a pood account of Itself, should It I culled upon to fight defensively In home waters against such part of some other navy as might be sent thous ands of miles away from home. On the whole, then, the naval outlook of the next few years is one which the full ed States may regard with entire equaninlmity, whether It considers merely its own prospective strength or also that of the powers which are Its closest friends and natural allies. The business men of Astoria have been taught a good lesson this year, land hereafter, it Is to be hoped. As .torians will not be so blind to their own interests as to permit the re-" 'gatta to go by. The regatta has not 'only always held a large number of next year, and, if experience is worth anything to those most interested, the managing committee w!il not be com pelled to beg for funds. After all Schwab has not resigned the presidency of the United States Steel Corporation. Perhaps he feels that he owes it to himself to hug closely up to that million a year.
