in the story of Helen Wagner, who died
In Seattle In June while there was
pending in the circuit court in Seattle
her appeal from a conviction of grand
larceny. The crime had occurred in
Nome. Shortly after the death of the
woman her prosecutor was arrested
for perjury, and the fact of her In
nocence became clear. It is alleged
that the witness was hired to swear
away the liberty of the woman against
whom two gamblers had a grudge,
and that by mistake he wreaked their
vengeance upon another woman. She
was adjudged guilty, and died while
the shadow of disgrace was hanging
over her. As to the character of the
victim, the dispatches say nothing,
and, indeed, this is a matter of no
consequence in this connection. If she
was snared in a net of perjury, . the
perjurers are creatures more vile than
have any right to live. There is
no law to reach them. It tvouM be
difficult to convict them of the murder
for which, morally, they are culpable,
