The king of Italy wants to cut his army expenses and combat Ameri can manufactures with the nvmey; and this Is a great man whose name we should like to learn. Miss Taylor has a queer idea of ofll ilal propriety. She wants to be priv ileged to hold a subordinate position In the federal sendee and be free to In dulge in public criticism of the admin istration and her Immediate super visors. Nobody will sympathiie with Miss Taylor in her failure to clndicate her tkeory. - ;J , ' What a fine motto 'or a federation of nations this sentence from 'Wash ington's letter to Ho?'n-iotu wn!il make- "We have been eontemprdtdes and fellow laborers In the cause of liberty, and we have livl together as brothers should do In harmonious friendship." It has already been used on the Eochambcau monument, and it describes the present relations be tween the United States and France, as well as those between Washington and Eochambeau. A DESIRED IMPROVEMENT. The members of the Civic Improve ment Lea true nre anztaus (hat the wr t erfront should bi a Tr:e appearance and in this, as in every other Instance, they are perfectly right. Commerelalr President Hill of the Great Northern was both lucid and epigrammatic In hi talk to the Washington wheat growers at the Dmvnport ooi'orenee. "As well attempt," he said, "to set a broken limb by law rs ta adjust railroad rates by statutes. You can legislate until the barn doors rot off. The best thing to do Is to act ns you have here., with the offlclils. We will try to act In su'-h a way that you will re:i!i?.e thit vp nre doing something fair and in good faith " It depends, of course, a good deal on the "officials" and on the shippers, too. If fill the railway executives in the country could uniformly h relied n to be as fair to their patrons as in this particular lnsTanc? and if ail the patrons of the railroads were r.'-.v- er rnote exacting or mare i:nretfcor nble in their Jeniar.'U an desires than are the farmeis of the "Pi? P.nd" country, there would be no need of laws, stats or federal, teniili -.g ti railwav traffic of th count;-). Fat It Isn't for that sort of people thst the state or the government ennets and enforces lavs. If all men were strict ly honest, penalties for stealing would be as ridiculous as they would be su nerflitous. It is for the antitheses of tha fair and the honest that railway legislation Is necessary. We cmlte agree with Mr. Hill that this sort cf legislation has not been Tre-emlnently successful thus far In accomplishing Its purpose, but we cannot sba-e his pessimism as to the outlook for possible improvement. In fact, it Is not too much to hope that, within the life-time of a sound barn door bung today, there may be In our statutes something which wMI exactly lit existing transportation conditions and be helpful In adjusting rates. A barn door Isn't such a tremen dously loner-lived nffair anyway, and the pocple Bl" presunwN.v getting a little bit wiser every day. In many PATENT MEDICINES which are largely consumed throughout the country, by all classes of people, there is a nercentase of alcohol which puts them on a level with beer, rum and j whisky as intoxicants, it is tne smau ness only of the dose prescribed which prevents a prompt recognition of the in toxicating effects of these so-called medi cines by those who use them. It is sate to amnn that tney are MEDICINES IN NAME ONLY. Their chief value lies in their alcoholic effect as a stimulant. In fact, those who know, attribute the benefits ascribed to this class of medicines wholly to the stimulative effect of the alcohol they contain. They are used largely by per sons not in the habit of drinking liquors, and the little dose taken three or four time a day is as stimulating to these people as his regular "finger" of "bit ters" is to the regular liquor-drinker. WH.VT CAN BE DONE? " What ouzht to he done at least is to combcl every patent-medicine manufart- urer to put on ine wrapper uj nn vuiite the quantity of alcohol it contains. That would at least leave people to exercise their own iudsnnents. More than that, no paper trulv interested in temperance ; reiunn miuuiu jjiiol .ot oii,wii3..uvu of anv alcoholic medicine. It should be the duty of every temperance organiza tion and branch in the country to look into this question, nutate it. and deal with the facts just as earnestly and as honestly as other facts have been dealt with." Appreciating the gravity of the issue raised bv the strong statement of facts made in' the foregoing article, we wish to call general attention to the fact that Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery and Dr. Pierce's 1'uvorile Prescription contain SO ALCOHOL, NO WHISKY, NO INTOXI CANT OF ANY KIND. These medicines are equally free from opitmi and other n.-ireotiei. Tiiey are in the strictest meaning of the words, temperance ineitieiite. Of no other medicine, pUt up (.jrw-eially for woman's use can it be truth fully a finned, as of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription, that it contains neither alcohol nor opium or other narcotic in any form. While the negative features of iJoctor Pierce's medic-Men may only interest some of the readers of this artiele, the positive features of these medicines must be of interest to e very one. The great value of "Goldi.-f Medical Discovery" in the cure of diseased or (itnnged con ditions of the stomach and digestive and nutritive organs is testified to by less of thousands who have found health and healing in this great remedy. The " Dis covery" increases the action of the blood making glands, and by curing the dis eases which corrupt and cripple the stomach and digestive and nutritive or gans, it enables a full and pure supply of blood to be sent to every part of the body. WOMEN KNOW ITS WORTH. Women who are always appreciative of benefits, have been especially appre ciative of the benefits following the use of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. Its wonderful cures of irregularities, inflam mations, ulcerations and female troubles, bave caused women te name it, "that God-send to women." It is entitled to wear the " blue ribbon " of merit as well at the blue ribbon of temperance. 7'" w iVii i mjitnttmm Perfect Health Is within the reach of almost evert woman.
