It would be entirely beenath the dig nity of any self-respecting newspaper to attempt a reply to the rot appear ing la yesterday's issue of the Even ing Sewn, In so far as it applies to . the .-Horian or to any person connect ed with the'Astorian Publishing Com pany. Sufficient to fay that the state ments made are each and all utterly devoid of that feature which should characterire every utterance of a newspaper the truth. But In regard to the real gist of the article In ques tion vhich Is a Kick-handed slap at trade-unionism, It Is apparent that the force of such a blow can but be spent against the man who dares to so fla grantly attack the most powerful or ganization In our country the Feder ated Trades. When a man vents his spleen against an integral part of this federation, he strikes every portion of It. To charge or to Insinuate that the local Typographical I'nlon is fhi tool of any one person or firm Is a slur and a slander on every honest wage earner. It Is a calumny which will not pass unnoticed by those whom It affects, "That such a condition could exist for the purpose of forcing a rival out of business Is not only preposter ous but reflects Ignominy and suggests extreme recklessness on the part of the one making such a charge. That the scale of wages made by the printers' union is not exhorbitant Is evidenced by the fact that every office in the city except that of the News has signed the agreements as submitted. As for the Astorlan, it has always been considered a union office, and has acceded to every demand made by the union printers employed in the office for years past. Not only is this true but it has upheld the men and wom en, boys and girls who have during the past year or more been organiz ing in every branch of industry for the better protection of their rights. The laborer is wsrthy of his hire, which should mean at least a sood living, be be poor and struggling at the foot dt the ladder .or laboring smid the cares and responsibility of business life. AN OLD PHRASE REVISED. That old phrase originating with the Civil war, and which is so full of the sentiment of comradeship, to-wit: "We have drunk from the same can teen," Is supplemented by a more mod ern one, arising from the Spanish war, which has a touch of humor as well as comradeship in it At Sea Girt, where Mr. Roosevelt reviewed the New Jersey ta:e troops, he reeoipiz ed in one of the e iftineers that do' t JOB PRINTING DEPARTMENT EDWARD PRIOR, Manages First-Class U p-t o-D a t e Work UNION LA 110 K ONLY "I luv a rooster for tew things one Is tlie krow that Iz iu lilin, and the other iz the spurs that air on him to bak up his krow with." "No, indeed." replied the ex-cavalryman, "we fought together In the same troop anil ate out of the same tomato can at San Juan hill!" The canteen and the tomata can represent the free and easy ways of the army, and stand for the soldier's meat and drink. Edward VII. has boon crowned. Whether or not he shall have man years In which to reign is not for man to say. But the coronation taking place does away with one very serious problem, that of ignorant people be lieving in the prowostications of a. few who call themselves prophets. They have said Edward would never be crowned and their prophecy was false. It is to be hoped that this will in some measure assist condemning and doing away with the foolish prac tice. Though Americans are not be lievers In monarchy themselves, and know that Edward VII. has perhaps not been the highest type of a man, tilt he has a friendly feeling for our country and we can but wish him health and a long life just the same. He may not be as great a ruler as some others, still, there has been many a worse king. It is pleasing to note the interest which is manifested in taking up the ouestion of Injustice toward our fisher men. The Investigation Is now in the hands of a committee of men. who with a desire of righting a wrong will probe thoroughly into the matter and will then see that the right steps are taken in the case. This sacrificing of life and net should arouse the indigna tion of every man who believes in giv ing a working man an honest chance.
