The late John W. Macfcay conduce d and -was concerned In many vast enterprise but so qui tly that he was Mtrle In the newspapers co.nprid with many olher financiers whose capital and horlxon were much lest than his. He tu a very cautious man and perhaps much of his success was due to tha quality, which cauesd him to avoid the spectacular for the ibtan tlal. He-was a man of heart ana his ben efactions were large and numerous, but their bestowment was quiet and in accord with the reserve whlc he maintained thrughout his long career. The only public utterance upon the subject of his charities that he was ever known to 'make -was the remark that the most difficult thing tn all his experience was helping a man with out hurting him. The man who wants help Is apt to learn dependence upon others Instead of himself. Such a man is often hurt by helping him since It puts hlra further away from In dependence. Mr. Mackay's remark was a disclos ure of his very profound philosophy. It ts a philosophy that goes with in terrogatlon to the whole policy of pen sions and benefits. When men learn that they can depend upon something besides their own present exertions, which they are physically and men tally capable of making, they are apt to fall Into chronic dependence, which means permanent indigence. There fore Mr. Mackay believed," and wisely, that the best way to help such men to by helping them to help themselves. If they can help themselves and will them and tend to create a permanent pauper case. No one knows, or ever will know, the experiences out of which Mr. 'Mac kay evolved his philosophy. No doubt he helped many to help themselves to Independence, and many took his bounty only to sing deeper into de pendence and unthrift. But ow that he has passed away the one expres sion into which his experiences 'were conoreted may well be pondered by those who need help and by those who can jive it. He contributed to the activities of his time more than most men, even those of equal means. The influence of his business enterprises was far reaching, and his quiet ways made him exceptional. But it may well be that Ms best legacy to the world Is his philosophy of benefaction. i DIED THROUGH FAITH. Their minds are so beclouded or per verted by their delusion that they are not safe to be at large tn a com munity of more or less rational peo ple. There la ductless something good in " Christian Science," for a few people who can and do use their faith Cor the benefit of themselves and oth ers, to some extent; but the trouble is that so many weak-minJeU but perve.-se people, gathered into various cognate "folds," generally lea ana flim-flammed by some shrewd scoun drel like Dowle, set up their ignorant, misplaced "faith" agulast natural law, reason, common sense, duty and even mercy to their own helpless and suffering children and others, that in a case like this society acting through tie law must use Its hand, either to punish or to restrain."
