This verdict five Kiss from the dutches of the law, and he Is once again enjoying his liberty, it Is slat ed that the Jury stood nine for acquit tal to three for conviction during the greuter part of the night, 1)t the ver dict was finally reached. In this re spect Kiss has been very for lunate, both Juries which irk'd him eventual ly agreeing on a verdict after m all- night session. The charge of which Kiss was yesterday acquitted was file second indictment returned against him for alleged net-stealing. The com plaining witness In this we was John Dragollch. Kiss was pulling boat for n man named Walter Wage and de nied all knowledge of the alleged theft. The Jury evidently bWleved him and presented him with Fourth of July freedom, which proved moat accept able after his stay In Jail if three weeks. Thomas Taylor, the well-kmyvn seiner, bus lost his launch, the Lid la & Marie, In a most peculiar manner, and the aild of the law will probably be r.ecessaa-y to secure Its return to the owner. The launch drifted away from Uie Taylor seining grounds on Thurs day night. The tide was bblng at the time and the craft was carried to wards the bfr. Messages were sent to the life-saving crews, asking them to keep a lookout for the launch. Ear ly yesterday morning she was sighted ty two fishermen, who went aboard htr and dropped the anchors. When the life-saving ctcw sighted the launch Ihey went after her, but the two llsh- ernien reached the boat first and took posyesslon, Whon She tide turned the launch was towed to the city by the co-operative company's tender. Mr, Taylor went after his boat, but the men refused to surrender it. The owner offered the fishermen 150 for their trouble In bringing the boat to the city, and also agreed to pay the co-operative company. a fair price for lowing the launch. The fishermen Ce manded $500, and declined to listen to overtures, Several men were on the launch and soma of them n-ere arm ed; one having displayed a gun when a man employed on tha boat made an effort to get a suit of clothes which was aboard. . Mrs. Taylor's watch, which had been left on the launch, was taken by the life crew and turn ed over to Mr. Taylor. Yesterday' celebration of the Fourth of July was the greatest ever held on the Columbia river, Even tin; weath er was a success and there wa noth ing to inur the pleasure of the occas ion. The procosslon took Its way through the principal street of the city, lenolnat Ing at Foard & Stoke 'hall, where In door exerrises were held, the rain of th? morning having prompted the com mitten to abandon the courthouse stand. The big hall was crowded to the doors when the exercise were com menced, and hu.idreds turned away, unuible to find standing room. An ex eeptlonally interesting program was carried out, the feature boing the ad dress of Hon. Victor B. Dolllvar, of Iowa. Mr. Dolllvar' ieech was a charwtterlsMc- one, full of enthusiasm and patriotism, and h was often in terrupted by his hearer, who were aroused to a hkh pitch of enthusiasm. Th-? orator possess1 an easy grc that Is extremely pleasing, and his sieeh was one of the best ever l-ard ' in Anorla. Early In the morning the free boats left the city to get thi country crowd. Shortly after 8 o'clock they beah re turning, and soon the street were crowded with visitors. People came from all directions and It Is believed fully :i0is) strangers were In town dur ing the day. The boats brought great crowds, while every arriving train was packed. The people living in the city soon began to make their appearance on the streets, und before noon It was difficult for one to make his way from one street to another. During the morning Imprecations were heaped up on the head of the weather :nan, but iIm crowd became good-natured as the day brightened and the raindrops cens ed their patter. The celebration really commenced at sunrise. Of course, the sun rose, but at' that hour It was not visible. How ever, the fact that he had risen became known to the men who were to tire the salute, and soon the booming of can non aroused ths expectant Astorians from their slumbers. After the din had been started it was continued, nnd early this morning the enthus iasts could be heard firing crackers along tha streets. The stores of all the merchant a were- open until tihe noon hour, and the crowds surged back and forth along the streets, anxiously awaiting the start of the celebration. The benches placed along the sidewalks proved of great convenience and they were soon lined with women and "children. Pret ty dresses were evry where to be seen. and Astoria looked guy indeed, her streets bedecked with th national col ors and the buildings adorned with evergreens and attractive streamers. It was an animated scene that look ed good, and everybody prepared to enjoy himself. The parade took place at 1:30. Short ly before 1 o'clock the United States troops arrived by special train from Fort Stevens and took .their position. The parade was a magnificent turn out and waa about 40 minutes In pass ing. First come the chief of police and patrolmen, antt the Ragle Mili tary Band, followed by the tjroops. Then the Eagles' lodge marched In pine?, tlie Finnish Brotherhood follow ing. The liberty car was next and at tracted much attention. Miss Safer made a lovely Goddess of -Liberty and was accorded a warm ovaltlon. The Q. A. R. and Foresters also turned out, the floats of the business houses and civic organisations occupying positions over the world, and that's why we havo our new possessions." , After the exercises at the hall the crowd assembled to see the sports. The events were highly amusing and tlie show did not drag. By the time the sports program had been carried out the dinner hour had rolled areund. After dinner came the band concert, then the Illuminated bicycle parade, and finally the fireworks display from tho hill. The bicycle parade waa a very pretty feature, the cycllsU going ail over town. During the progress of tills event colored fire was burned in the streets and the ilium! naUon was watched by great crowds of petpie. The closing event of the day, the ball at Foard t Stokss' hall, was largely attended, find proved a most enjoy, able function. Altogether It was a great day ror storla. and the members of the Re tall Clerks' Union and other who as sisted In making the celebration such a grand success are deserving of great praise. Had the weather been better the city doubtle-j would have been overcrowded with visitors, but there was a very large crowd us It was, and everyone Is well pleased.
