London Time. Nor art we glad only that the war 4s at an end. We are jtlad, also, and in bo lew degree, because we are now al lowed to resume our proper work of ,. civilization. We do not lay down our burden. We do not disguise from our selves the fact that we have now to begin anew labor uninterrupted by the self-seeking of men misled by Ignorance and jmbltion. It is malenciholy o re flect that but for the usurpation of power by a ring of foreign adventurers mtm knew how to corrupt and to play upon the prejudices of the population Ihey have betrayed, the work we now have to take in hand would already have been far advanced by iie fruitful methods of peace. It the war has last ed long after reasonable resistance ought to have ended, we may at least count- as gain that H has completely broken the power and destroyed the In fluence of one of the worst sets of evil counsellors who ever disturbed the peace of the world. The "Independence Belg," which has been very much In tha confidence of the Boer delegates to Europe, now Indicates very clearly Its appreciation of their real character. It observes that the concilfiatlon of Boer and British interests was quite possible, and that as the Boers now accept prajtioaliy tf same terms that were offered to them a year ago, we i may conclude that the continuance of the war during the past year was made Inevitable by the attitude of the Boer deletes in Europe. They are pun ished most people will thmk very in adequately by seeing themselves ex cluded from the negotiations and practically disavowed. It weuld seem Indeed, that the only difference be tween the successful and the unsuc cessful attempt-to come to terms Ues In the fact that the tnist-hief-makerB in Europe were listened to a year ago and are ignored today. We hare now to deal with tt genuine popuSattoe of the new colonies the new subjects "arhjm ttie King has welcomed in his gracious message of congrautlation Thy may be sure that Sir Henry Campbell-Bann?rman spoke for En glish people wh-M he said that we do full Justice to the good qualities of those who have been our antagonists, but are now our friends and fellow eltlsons. We have no desire but to bring them into line as speedily as pos sible with the rest of our colonies, and to hand over to them as practicable ihe loenl libertlifl which so many free communities enjoy under the British faff. Peace is received with mixed feelings When that cry sounds how people rash to help and sympathize! And when some fireman rescues a woman from the flames, the streets. echo with ap plauding shouts. Ana yet tt tnat MM' woman had perished in the flames it is pos tT sible that she would have suffered less than she suffers al most daily from the inflammation which disease has lighted in : the delicate womanly organism. That fire of inflam mation can be put out. The enawiae Dr. Fierce s favorite ?AJ& Preserintion not onlv establishes womanly "vySt"! regularity ana ones ' If? "l neas inflammation Mfclh ifJl Ulcerations ana fflllhhflll cures female weak If ness- It makes weak ' women strong and sick women well. "I nflrrd for four yean with what four phy sician! pronounced ulceration and prolaptra of tht uterun," write Mrs. Ada Brooks, of Kirty ville, Tanry Co., Misnouri. "Also inflammation f bladder and urethra. My case was chronic and complicated. Had several good physicians, but kept getting worse. Had been confined to By bed five months when I wrote to you. I sreeived your reply very soon and then dis sussed my physician and beiran taking Iir, Kercr'a medicines. I took eight bottles of his Fawwite Prescription' and ' Golden Medical Discoverv." and beiran to get better at once. In two months I could sit up in a chair, and kept " getting better. In four months could do all my louse work, including washing and sewing. Dr. Pierce's Common Sense Medical .- Adviser, paper covers, it sent free on jeceipt of 21 one-cent stamps to pay expense of mailing only. Address Dr. JU V. Pierce, Buffalo, N. Y. Firei ripen by our foreign critics, but we note with satisfaction many expressions of jl-mii'ie gladness that we have reach ed the enl of a struggle affcvtlng many Interests besides our own. Not even the Anglophobia of the past two or three years ca,n cause our lovers of peace In Europe to forget that the British Rmplr Is a great moderating Influence In the councils of nations, and thit our preoccupation In another continent does not help Hberty or paee of material prosperity In Eu rope. That a bitter-sweet tone per vades many of the remarks made up on he subject Is only what we might expect. It 'does not alter the fact that the conrl'jtHi of the war Is hailed with a general sense of relief, and that deep In the mind of the most grudg ing critic who can look tlwj least bit ahetri lies the conviction that the Is sue if the war makes for civilisation nnd for the peace of the world. The Oermsn prss Is. accor.hngto Its wont, the mrtst acrimonious and ungenerous In 4ts comments. It is a disannolm- ment for the Germans that we have carried our burden without any sign of distress, and that we come out of the struggle stronger and mure respected than when we entered upon It. TVt have gained by the war rot only the imperii! position which was assailed, but a, new consolidation of the re source if She empire, and a magnifi cent development of mascent Imperial sympathies. It is a very considerable advantage that we have also cement ed the friendship we most highly prise. whk4 finds expression in the generous and sympathetic comments of the New Tork press, and it isa minor advantage that we have also diaccvered beyond all doubt whfre ties the most bitter Jealousy of our power. ESSENTIALS OF SUCCESS. To the highest success in life three things are essential, namely: First, one should nave difficulties to over come; second, one should be able to overcame; third, one should be willing to overcome. Only weak men crave easy places. As the Are is helped in the ship by opposing winds, so young men wo have the real fire within. welcome the opposing winds of pov erty, limited opportunities, discourage ment and all that may be against them, knowing that if they are able to overcome, latent capabilities shall be brought out in the conflict, and things wfich at first seem to hinder will afterwards become helps rather than hindrances. The rough mountain sides may furnish foot-bold for climb ing loftier views and better fields on the other side. A crown of thorns furnished by enemies sometimes be come more royal than the best Jewels that friends can give, because through travail triumph may be born and through crucifixion larger life appears. The Important thing Is to be on the side of right, of truth, of triumph. Then everything will help us. The best scholars tell us that the woman here means redeemed humanity and the earth means the forces of nature. Thus we Interpret the truth and de clare that all forces of this world are ready to help redeemed humanity when redtemcd humanity is Tioly and -willing to be helped. We hear a great deal about common sene, of its value and 4ts importance. Now, in ord?r to form an Idea of it, we ought to gut definition of It. What then is common sejrse? It Is to think and act everywhere and always Just ly and properly; we ee then that common sense Is not as common as Its name would Imply. How few people think justly and properly. To think justly and properly one must have ac quired knowledge, and a considerable share of experience. You must lie on your guard aaint prejudices or act ing hastily or pa.siona'.ly. To become prejudire is to form a judgment with out proper Information. To be actu ated by pasion is to be so moved by a desire or aversion that the mind be comes clouded and unable to see clear ly and ttius distinguish properly. Can It be possible that William Jen nings Uryan has been defeated too often to accept another nomination, or is It for fear that It might deprive him of a larger and more noted defeat. Perhaps he feels about the governor nomination as the old man did when asked If he would not wear his dia mond stud to the banquet, and said he feared the napkin would hide It. Won der if Bryan made a mistake. General Joseph Wheeler says he doesn't care to see the coronation at a thousand dollars a seat.
