Spent His Entire Fortniie in As sisting the I'owr of His Town. (Correspondence of Associated Press.) ST. PETERSBURG, June 10. A great local sensation has been caused here by the death under distressing circumstances of Dr. Nictaolavlch Dvorashln, the physician who render ed first assistance to the wounded Csr Alexander IT. Dr. Dvorashln possessed brilliant attainments and a high education, was a pioneer in some branches of medical practice and a creditable natur painter and mu sician, withal, a mod'.l of physical strength, beauty and personal charms. Ho happened to be in the office of the general staff which faces the palace square when the wounded cxar reach ed the palace where the physician rendered the first medical assistance. For fills and in recognition of his ser vices as a military surgeon, a pension of (15 a month was granted J.)r. Dvor ftshin, when a few years ago Ms once brilliant mind became clouded. His derangement waa scarcely more than a mania for bestowing charity. Un less -Batched by his mother, by adop tion, an English woman by birth, he would give awiy all his money or spend his last coin purchasing sup plies for the poor, which he would dis tribute with his own (bands. He has long sag- dissipated In this manner his hereditary or acquired property having found various night shelters, benevolent worhouses and the like. In spite of the watchful care of his mother he fell into the hands of the police on several occasions and was taken to a local insane asylum, ,but each time she managed to secure his release. About three weeks ago he frightened some elderly nu.is though a harmlesi but misdirected attempt at charity. A crowd of peasants attracted by the cries of. the alarmed women believed he had profaned holy pictures and be gan beating him. The physician de fended himself vigorously and be came momentarily violently Insane. He was taken to the insane asylum as before, but this time he was not released. The hospital In which he Vaa confined was constructed for the use of only 300 prisons, but at the time of the doctor's detention there It wai occupied by over 1300 inmates. Owing perhaps to the foul air or for sleeping on a miserable pile of straw Dr. Dvorashln was soon suffering from influenza. His mother visited him thres homa daily, tut other M tendaiice thre was none, accordirg ing to her account. In ehort, the unfortunate man who entered the hospital robun and phy sically sound, was soon reduced to helplessness. Unable to eat the coarse food sent from the hospiti! kitchen or to help himself with the things Lis mother would leave after her three hours' stay wns ended, lie died after 17 days of suffering. This hospital has long been in bad repute. Dr. Dvoraahin's - father by adoption, Alexander Ivanoivteh Evropeus, was m noted man in his day and was the tlrst writer who seriously attacked the proW-jm of emancipation and political reform under Csar Nicholas I. He was banished t o I'auoafsus whither his sweetheart was encouraged by the then heir apparent, the Czarewltch Alexander, to follow him there and they were married. Upon his acces sion Alexander It. immediately re called the exile. KNAPPA NOTES. Mrs. Banks Is quite ill. Miss Bertha Moody has returned home from school in Astoria. There are to be two weddings in Knappa within a week, says dame rumor. v Mrs. Itotot. Coutler, who was on a visit to her mother last week, went home to Astoria, sick. There is some talk of a picnic here on the Fourth for the benefit of those who cannot go away to celebrate. Mrs. Radeliffe received several nice presents from her young f fends on her birthday. The young folks all love Mrs. R. who is always ready to help them have a good time. That strong east wind last week rid dled the photo tent, which our teacher T. O. Hutchinson had just set up pre paratory to taking a few pictures. It will soon be mended and put up again. Mr. Johtin was made happy Saturday evening by the return of his wife and young son Ray, from Portland where Ray has been undr treatment since February loth, for epilepsy. He is somewhat improved, but not well yet. Life on the farm and sxereiie on ti'.s new rubber tire tricycle will ro dubt further Improve his health. Mrs. Crow was obliged to dismiss two of her large pupils list week for wilful insubordination, fostered, in the case of one, a young lady, by her father, who instructed her to break a certain rule of the school whenever she pleased. How sad! Parents mis treat their children when they en- ! courage them in wrongdoing, as It in variably results in future sorrow to ! the child and detriment to the com munity in which they .live. The ice cream and strawberry fes tival given by the ladies of the Pres byterian church last Wednesday was quite a success, the dear profits being over $29. Numbers were distributed to the ladies and like numbers to the gentlemen. Each gentleman then .'ought ;he lady having his number n l treated her to refreshments, after which th.v selected other fair ones and a general good time resulted. The animal shied while Mrs. Webb was riding near Shelbume farm with a party of friends. The rider was thrown to the ground and was un conscious several hours. After an ex amination, doctors from Burlington announced that the inujrles were not serious, althontfii Mrs. Webb will be confined to the house for some time, and will suffer severely.
