An enterprising edlkrr way down In South Carolina treats it to a roast and a local paper takes it up and in dorses it the roast. The Astorlan had received a copy of the paper canta n hig the roast s:Viral c'aya ago, anil as the matter was considered of such small lmportanct to the community, handled It by correspondence through the malls with the humorom Southern writer. But as the Ucal p;p r has taken It up and mixed things gener ally It may be well to reproduce the Item which appeared in the AHtorlan and which has caused much com ment. There was not one word in the Item in reference to South Carolina, but some local citizen, who doubtle.-s hails from that state, took umbrage at the article and forwarded It to his home paper, with a biographical sketch of the editor of the Astorian. There Is not a false statement In the article, neither Is it overdrawn. The editor of the Astorlan Hived in that eountry through the times described and knows whereof Ihe speaks, it was only the mlsgarbMng or misreading the ' article that stirred up the thin-skinned gentlemen Who are worrying over ihe artcle. Everyone in the least post ed about the matter knows that for 30 year after the war tfhe conditions ex isted eaxctly as described In the ar ticle almost universally all over the Couth. There may have been a few point that were exceptions to thv rule, biK they wer? few. The JSouth today I different. Fu;kiwing is the article that 1 a- brought the Astorivn aiid this section of the country into such notoriety: For 30 years after the civil war the people of the South remained in the same rut. They wo:kel tn the siine manner, raised cotton and corn, plow ed and r.o;d with the same kind of crude inplements, built the same kind cf houses, kept the same kind of stores, sold the same kind, of goods, vot d the same tilket and fought in the same old way, and entertained the same kind of feuds . From father to son, and to grandson they "followed in the fame footsteps and pusse.-ued the same ambitions. An innovation on their work, any thing that tended to get out of the regular rut seated like foolhardiness to them. They raised cotton and corn and bought their meat and wearing apparel from the North. The North ern people began to investigate the country. They found that there were openings there for the Northerner. The Northerner went there and raised hogs, and wbat and fine blooded stock, and established cotton mills and factories. The Southern people were startled; they thought the new com ers were fools the Idea of getting out of the rut!" Dance, or chorea, is one of the most pitiable afflictions humanity is called on to endure. That this disease can be cured, however, is proven by the fact that it has been cured by the use of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. The iranijuiii.nig eneci upon the nerves ex ercised by this re markable medicine is witnessed to by thousands who have found healing and strength in its use.
