Astoria's "ten derloin" district The thurch people think R is a hell-hole and the ramb lers think about the same thing. There are all kinds of rumors and statements about the "tenderloin" "Swilltown," as It is generally called. The church people and the "mora!" element have the idea that the young boys of the city are being debauched In "Swilltown." Astoria's "tenderloin" has all of the attractions of the modern wide-open town, and is open for business early and late. A representative of the As torian sees it In all of its phases. In the morning "Swilltown" would fur nish Oray a great subject for a poem n quietude, etc. In the afternoons it still bears that aspect In the early evening "Swilltown" begins to put on more pretentious ' proportions. The Everyone is in danger who neglects the warnings of declining health. The warnings are not as startling as the sud den shriek of a locomotive, but they are just as ominous. When the body begins to lose in flesh, when the cheek is hollow and the rlfLj? Nature's warning it Fiuui tlmt the to'r i '-n )IUf failing of nrooer , -CT - - , , I nourishment. It is a condition of "weak" stomach, and ' weak " stom- . ach soon involves A other organs. Dr. Pierre's Golden Medical Discovery cures diseases of f'fthe stomach and f other organs of digestion and nu trition, and cures through the stom ach diseases seem ingly remote, but which have their origin in the disease of the stomach and its allied organs. There is no alcohol in the " Discovery and it if absolutely free from opium, cocaineand all other narcotics. "B !..re I connno "ed to UK rour mnttcine I waa ia a bad condition (for ngrht vearw). and fciir doctor, trratrd me. wnla iltf. BAlie Ak?w, of Garysbur)C, Northampton Co., N. Dr. Pierce's Helical Adviser, 1008 large pages, paper binding, sent free on m-ceipt of 21 one-cent stamps to pay expense of mailing only, or 31 stamps for ft in cloth binding. Address Dr. X.. V. Pierce, Buffalo, N. V. 1 11 w. " mm,. 7Sl y ju: rockers com In early, have a dance. uke a drink, fall by the wy-a'd or go home. 4 , fi ; To teU the truth, in tn tour dane halls In SwlUtewn" there Is an ag gregation of the homliest women that ever d -Hauched tioir Uvea in beer and revelrj"- There are many of them; and every man who enters !a besieged for a dance or a drtnk a dance' and drink together is more relished. These; poor omen who dress toTtttract men in "swtlltown" do their best to shin. Some make good appearance until you st their facer then,. 'weU,: ask some i.ne who has been there. - But there r some young girls gving owa the road of quick, ultimate de ft ructi ! who look bright and intelli gent y H. htit n their eyes will he bedim i with beer and other intox icants, umll they will be c'aed with she O'her useless hags. But the alarm about young boys be ing debauched there is a mistake. Chief Hallxk and his offlcera are keeping a liiokout and the keepers of the!e dives sire vigilant to keep out the young boys. It ia mostly the "boys" of age thai are keeping op Swill:owiv" They range from the a. clety dude to the nvvst nspcted set tled business, professional man and officers. Officers, business men and citlxens of the highest standing may be found there from 1 o'clock to J, some mornings, drinking, dancing and hav ing a good time. They probably re port "club'' or "business cares.' These are the men that keep the thing -going.' Then why should the city officers be blamed? Tbe "moral" element need not wor ry about the "yoang boys" and the gamblers and officers, but the substan tial citlxens who spend more money than any others are responsible. If the prom'nent, melt in Astoria who frequent "Swilltown- wish a list of the names of the men who visit the place, they may call at this office and get them. A gentleman from Portland yester day remarked that Portland had some political liars, but that for thm sonare inch Astoria had more than any place he bad yet visited. He said that the Simon faction in Portland had . won over a few miguided In one way and another, but that anything like a vic tory for Chamberlain In Multnomah County was all rot It Is only a case of presenting a 'fronf' on the part of cheap Portland politicians hoping that the non-nlt-nothlng party might have a respectable showing for future pur poses. When a home defamer gets turned loose "he will stick to a lie the closer. The only way to treat such persons is to let them run their rope. Already tbe more his position Is exposed. When known at home they must become known abroad. If the Chamberlain advocates had anything to stand upon they might inspire confidence by their howl, but as it is, they are not only laughed at and the good people of "the state pity the followers of a lost cause. The local ''non-partUans" do not ex pect anything, but they hope that way In the future they may inherit some thing for their fidelity in working when there is no hope. The Democrats and what-nots under their various assumed names are only Joking and lying this time for time, but when the June election is over they will- see how the people consider such coarse work.
