Shakespeare aya that the good that men do is often Interred with their bones, but Uiat the evil oft Uvea after them. In modern time It la different The good i extolled after a mn'a death but the evil fa "winked" at Since the battle of Santiago. Samp son has never been the same man again. Then In the best of health, of fine physique and manly bearing, he began to go down. Step by step he went down until yesterday afternoon he passed beyond the river. Since the victory of Santiago, Samp con has never had a friend- He was regarded as a man wno auempreo v steal the honors of another. The Amer ican people and the world at large condemned the man. The administra tion stood by h'm because it had placed him in command and regard In the days following the baby's birth there is often a long up-hill struggle to recover strength, and the nurse busies herself in the preparation of jellies snd broths for the invalid. When Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescrip tion is used as a preparative for mother hood the baby's advent is practically painless, there is abundant strength to nurse and nourish the child, and a raptd recovery from the shock and strain in separable from maternity. M wiii plcail that fir. Pierre oweted my Mttr," wrilf Mrs. C. W. Young, of 1! South YrmA BtiMt (Ue I'arkl, Witkcsoarre, Priina. When I had thane mUhap I began to think I would nerer have children. My back used la almost break and I would get nick at my atomach and have such headaches I did nut know what to do ; tliey ued to act me nearly crazy, and I uned to dread to t up, I felt ao bad ; then I Iwjran taking lr. Piercc'a Farorile Prescription. When baby wa expected I look it all the time 1 wa that way. I felt fine all the tine, and I never get thoat diiiy spella bow. I kanlly ever have a nervous headache any more. J have a perfect romp of boy: he ia the light of our home. I am now twenty years old and f baby ia almost eight montha old. I now feel well, and wetith 180 pound, and the baby i pounds W feel very grateful for the good vour medicine did for u. We art both healthy, Uiaukj to Dr. Pierce s medicine." Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellet keep the bowels heslthy. 'if f After ' I "Baby ed him a in command. If ttxer bud been i failure at Santiago, lter-Admiral Sampson would have been held responsible, v. - In all of the vituperation wrlt'en against Rear-Admiral Sampson It has never been charged th.vt he was not In command at the famous battle. It has only been charged that he was not present a the battle and waa not entitled to the honors of the victory. The Astortan would not cast one shadow on the fame of the great Schley. But now that Sampson le dead and all projudice agajnst him should be buried with" his-body It is proper to say if there Is om word to be sjxk In hi defense. He was In command. ( The battle took place In his absence." Great nid Schley, next in command, won the victory. The court of Inquiry decid ed that Sampson was rgiht and that Sth ley's claims were wrong. The American people decided with Schley, "vHiatever the American people say is generally right, but they are Impetu ous when they think a wrong Is being perpetrated. They thought Sampson was attempting to rob Schley ot his glory. They did not stop to consider. By their universal condemnation of Sampson they brought him to an un timely grave. He is dead. Now will the American people be charitable? Do not detract from the brave Schley, but give poor Sampson justice, Schley won the victory a great one. AU hon ors to him. But Sampson was In command. Who was the reaponslbWty upon? If there trad been defeat Samp son would have been to blame. He planned the battle. Then If his plans won, was he not entitled to share in the honors which the American peo ple have denied him. Grant was not at Appomattox until after the battle was over, but Who has ever denied Grant thehonor, though he had Just as brave under officers In the field as ScHey. In spite of the controversy between Schley and Sampson there may have been greater heroes In the holds of the battleships than either. AH honors to Schley, and throw the mantle of charity over the dead Samp son! A few days ago Mr. Elward Wright, marine editor of the Oregontan, while here, sent In an article to the Ore- goniaiy. charging the Astoria n wi.h casting gloomy prospects over the shortage in the salmon run this sea son for a designing purpose, and then proceeded to boom the run. Now the city editor of the same paper talks differently. He said in yesterday's Oregonian: ''Salmon fishing on the Lower Columbia is running under a slow bell at present, but everything is in worki.ng order and ready to take care of the first of the big schools of fish confidently expected as soon as they arrive. The long seines are drawn every day, but not so often as they might be, and IS salmon is considered auite a lame haul. The object Is to get the boat gear and men In gxd condition. Quite a number of shad are caught in the seines, and are sent to j the market, which Is now fully sup piled. The roe of the shad finds more ready sale than the fish themselves, although the shad are growing In fa vor every year. A local paper says that Chamberlain was nominated for governor without the expedlture of. a dollar, and that it cost money to nominate Furnish. While it cost money to hold each of the conventions that nominated these .gentlemen It was doubtless thrown away orl Chamberlain. The chances lot a Democrat In this campaign are not worth a dollar and probably the local i paper presumes that the Democrats did not go to so useless an exp;-n?e. A DOCTOIfS BAD PLIGHT.
