Eight Young Women Perish In a Cigar

occurred la a live-story brick struc
ture and occupies the entire block.
Twelve hundred persons were at work
st the time of the accident, ninety per
tent of whom were girls, whose ages
range from IS years upward. The
trouble began on the fourth floor of the
structure. The elevator was at the top
of the shaft and Baccus, Janitor of the
building, pulled a rope to bring It
down. He opened the door leading to
the shaft and leaned forward to see
where the carriage was A he did so,
the elevator, wWch was descending
alowly. struck him eo-oss the back of
his neck, pinioning his head between
the elevator and the floor. Some of
the younger girls fainted while others
hot being able to control their feelings
cried "fire." Instantly there was a
mad rush for the stairway leading to
the street below. Girls rushed down
the narrow stair-case until they reach
ed the bend in the exit between the
second and third floors. In J heir ea

ers fell. Others immediately follow
ing tripped over a struggling mass of
humanity and In less than a minute,
.there were hundred's of children and
young wome struggling is the passage
way. Shrieks and screams of terror
stricken gris could be heard for a block
or more. During the excitement an
alarm of tire was 'M-ned in, jut be
fore the engines could reach the scene,
several of the occupants of the build
ing had rushed to the windows and
jumped to 'he street, a distance of 50
feet.
AN OLD PIONEER.

Vinson came West when gold was first
disvovered in California and followed
nearly all the great mining excite
ments of California, Nevada, Oregon
and Idaho. He was an old time pack- I

regular meeting of the Push Club last
night, considerable Interest being man
ifested on some questions of the hour.
Mr. a Slemals was proposed and up
on motion elected an active member
of the club.
The committee on the entertainment
of the Travelers Protective Associa
tton. which Is proposed- to meet her
la June, by Its chairman made a re
port of the expenses to be Incurred
in the matter of a banquet, and It was
th concurrent expression that : the
drummers ought to be substantially
entertained, not only for the credit of
Astoria but for the comfort of the
guests. '
A movement to appoint a Joint com
mittee on the Lewis and Clark ex
position was carried and left to the
discretion of the chair at some future
time. There being no further business
before the club an adjournment was.
effected to the next regular meeting.

ing resorts, - pistols have been drawn.

heart of the old Knickerbocker dis
trict When the door swung ajar,
however, scores of persons rushed
from the rooms, which were located In
an old brown stone front residence,
and attempted to throw the captain
and bis men over the balustrade. Cap
tain Sheehan knocked several of his
prospective assailants unconscious
with his club. His men were being
rapidly borne toward the stairway,
however, and pistols were quickly
drawn. With bloodshed as a posslbll
ity the crowd quickly submitted and
61 prisoners were carried to the tender

blow on the head, but was not serious
ly hurt,

gates to the biennial convention of the
General Confederation of Women's
Clubs, various headquarters have be

ly action. Railroads estimate - -the
number of those arriving to attend the
convention at 8000.

ern candidate for presidency, while
Mrs. Platt-Decker, of Denver, and Mrs.
Robert J. Burdette, of Pasadena, are
Western candidates.
PENITENTIARY MCRDER.
HOUSTON, Tex., April $0. It has
Just been learned that a murder was
reecntly committed in the penitentiary
at Ru?k which is out of the ordinary.
Recently the San Antonio officers con
vlcted a number of Mexicans of rob
beries extending over several years in
which it w3 estimated that flO.OOt
worth of goods hid been stolen and
sold. The leader of the gang was
Ramon Mendez and he was given IS'
years. The police used Juan Agullar
for a witness and he was let off with
five years. As soon as Mendes had an
opportunity after arriving at the peni
tentiary he killed Agullar.

pany barge has Just been made at
Port Arthur A full cargo of 6000 bar
rels was sent into the barge and In an
hour and forty minutes from the time
