A committee of newspaper publish ers has been orgnaixed with iiead quarters at New Tork City, for the purpose of urging Congress of the ad visability of placing upon the free list wood pulp (mechanical ground wood) and to reduce toe duty upon paper. Jt is claimed that the matter is above politic; i hat our forests are threat ened and that knowledge is taxed. The pulp la made from spruce wood and It is stated that the spruce forests of the Bast are about exhausted. In com pelling newspapers to pay the tariff. It Is claimed, forces the reading pub Be to foot the bill and that In this way the Intelligence, the seekers of an education, have to pay it. The proposition of the newspaper oryanl tation may be for the best Interests of a large portion of the country, but Oregon can furnish the world with spruce wood for a number of years to come and do so at a reasonable price. The New Tork Times speaks as follows no the subject; "Bleaclied wood pulp pays a tariff tax of one quarter of a cent per pound. Un bleached pulp pays one-twelfth of a cent per pound if mechanically made, and one-sixth of a cent per pound if chemically mad?. The white paper upon which newspapers are printed is taxed three-tentSi of a cent per pound. The Intention and effect of these taxes is to enable American manufacturers of paper to charge a higher price for their product The interest of the newspaper public in abolition of the tax may be illustrated by an example It is Impossible for a newspaper to add to its celling price the exact addition al amount which it is forced to pay for white paper on account of the duty, if the prk-e of foreign-made paper is, nay. 2 centi a pound, the duty amounts to 15 per cent ad valorem. But a one cent newspaper cannot increase the price for whlcih It Is sold to the public by IS per cent, or 23 per cent, or any other fraction. It must raise its price 100 per cent or nothing. The public interest and he interests of the coun try are most seriously involved In an other way. The effect of tJie wood pulp tax is to hasten the destruction of American spruce forests .already seri ously encroached upon by the demands of the paper-making industry for this necessary raw material. Across the Canadian border and in Norway and other northern countries there are Im mense forests of spruce from which, but for the duty, our supply could be drawn. The tax is In effect a premium upon the destruction of American for ests." There has been an epidemic of sui cides over the country during the past week.' It Is claimed that this class of mania is epidemic. If they would always kill themselves first and not at- tempt to taek come one when they go K would be better for the community. One of the vm'Jent things for tkia country which hi happened for many days was rhe speech yesterday of a Southern Democrat and ex-confederate favoring the pension of MG annually for Mrs. McKlnley. The truth, about the report of the piece problem in South Africa seems to be about as difficult to get at as was the real situation of Miss Stone during her captivity. The Colombian revolutionists may fight their own little government with Impunity and establish new powers there every few days, but they are likely now to come to grief and ser ious grief at that. Rubbing up against I'ncle Para Is a different matter from what th-y have been accustomed to. It Is reported that the Democrats contemplate endorsing a part f the county Republican ticket It is tb? general opinion of Republicans that they would do well to endorse the en tire ticket "Don't Speak I.. ,tA nwOT,,an it m rn tA ne seen IV MBWV, ...., Ml the front platform of many cars.
