It Is a day of Innocent jokes, and while there are few who have not perpetrated or teen victims of jokes on this date, yet there are only a few who have Investigated to learn the origin of the custom. The day is observed or celebrated in this manner all over Europe and America, and in the Orient, so far as that is concerned, but there Is as much dif ference in opinion of the origin of the custom as there is in the manner of perpetrating jokes on the date by peo ples of different nations. , , The month itself was reckoned under the old Roman calendar as the sec ond month of the year, but was plac ed in the Julian calendar as the fourth. In tracing back the custom some have advanced the remarkable theory that It originated at the time Noah sent the dove out from the ark. Pilate and Olaphaa A later theory has been advanced to the ef fect that it came from a feast cele brated by the Hindoos wherein the day was devoted to all manner of pranks both at the feast and elsewhere, where the greatest of the cltiienshlp took part. It is claimed that England and Germany derived the custom from Prance. Wherever the custom may have or ijrinated and whatever little benefit may be derived from it, ft has become an universal one and will doubtless grow in popularity, from the fact that fun-lovere are ever on the Increase, will be wel to weigh it before giving it too much credence; or K might be well not to go hurriedly to every place directed .and some may even find a favorite dish at meal time ever so tempting, but digulaing some indiges tible substance beneath.
