Mr. Smith was one of the promoter ,,f tn,. Alaska Parkers' Asso.-latlon. and veil president of thai concern for Ihe first two year of its existence. The Cutting company, of which Mr. Smith's father was pr.-slibnt up to !i)ii. was organized early in the r,9s, Mr. Smith succeeding his father as president. After the building of the Astoria canneiy Mr Smith made an annual lsii lo Ibis city and was well known to many Asiorlans He was ene of San Francisco's most success ful business men. nml n few years ago was urged to accept the Kepub llcan mayoralty nomination. About that time heart trouble developed and Mr. Smith was compelled to decline Ihe proffered honor. Mrs. Smith and two daughters survive him. The eld est daughter was the wife of Lieuten ant U'nsdale. who was killed In Sa moa some years ago, and w hose tragic death stirred the American people.
