RAILROAD RECEIVERSHIPS. New York Commercial. Whili the thirteenth statistical report of the Interstate Commerce Commis sion will bring the official figures of the railway business In the United States down only to June SO, 1909, and w.!l cover specifically only the twelve months previous, the preliminary bulle tins of the report present much sigriti cant Infomatlon. This is especially th case in the mit- ier of rallraal receiverships, th rr?.'rt showing hat on June SO. 1S?5, there were 6S roads :hen In trie hands of the courts, while on June 30, 1 the numtxr had been reduced to 32. The return of "gd times," with Increased oppj.-tunities. Increased earnings and more plentiful money, no doubt had a direct influence in facilitating the sef.Ie ment of bankrupt railway affairs, and enabled not a tew companies to resume control of their properties on a basis of perfect solvency. One signflcant fact in this connection is the comparative unimportance of the fifty-two railroad companies that were still In re:?ivers' hands on June 30 of last yeir. Only five of them had an operated mileage In excess of 300 miles, seven of .hem had a mileage ranging from 100 to 300 miles, and of 40 of them the milage was less than 100. Most of the larg? and .nore Important proper ties that had become financially in volved during the business depression prior to 1S37 had been already pulled out of their difficulties or had bee absorbed by stronger companies by the close of June a year ago. And it is quite prob able that the figures for the year enleJ hre? w?eks aga would show an ev-n triors satisfarory condition. The entire cpravd mil?age of the receivership r ad a year agi was only 4177. As to the capital stock invilwd the aggregate of .his represented by reclv ership roads on June 30, 1), was $10. m the funlei debt was $107.33.022. and the current llabill:is $33.o31.:0. Tb--se figures show a decrease in capital stock represented, as compare! with the previous year, of $112,113,533. and in ,'unlH debt of $199,053,71?. however, until af:er a hn discussion in.l only then when tlioso propasng th' amendment consented to a limitation which p'ac;lcal:y put I: within the pow 'r of the Porto Rio in to have free com morclal InVroourv whenever they .I."
