Just nine years ago, for the first time we had a li brary in evidence not on paper in the room baok of the bank In the Kinnev building on Commercial street: 63' book w?re In order on the shelves and thlrty-sev'n yearly subscribers on our record book. In June the executive board xas illed to the requisite num ber of fifteen by the addition of Mrs. P. A. Stokes and ever since the num ber has remainfd the same. Several verv emcient members from -time to time nave, for various causes, found it expedient to resign, their places being filled by others equally efficient. From the very beginning we hAve had many donations of books and money, the first year from the football club. $S0: Hay Railwav Company, $22; Mr. chut ler, $10.50; $50 worth of printing1 for life membership from the Astorian Pub l.sning Company, store, chairs, tables, curtain? and other small furnishings to aid In beautifying and making com fortable our library room. February 1. 1S93, wa r?moved to our present room where we entirtain you tonight, in these nine years we have had only two librarians. Mrs. Sturfris. who was oblig ed to resign on account of ill health. July 15, 1S93, anj Miss Geary, our pres ent very efficient librarian. Our reading room was made free In April. 1S93. In June, 1S93, the reading room was opened on Sundays, a most excellent move on our part and one that has given great satisfaction. In the same year the result of a book re ception given in our room wrj the ad dition of 139 books and quite a sum of money. The treasurer's report on March 3, 1S94. showed the finances of the association to be in a most distreSsinsr condition, reserve fund exhausted, ex penses greater than receipts, and finan cial affairs very appalling, but our friends came to our aid by many unso licited and solicited donations, notice ably $73 from Grace church guild, our diminished 'unds gained a moet de lightful welirht and we weathered that storm. Three years of these continued efforts br.-iiisht to us their reward In a librarv of 13GS volumes, valued at $1500 and a list of thirty yearly subscribers May 4. 1S95. the council passed an ordinance allowing us $40 a month for current expenses, but as the warrant was dis counted for cash we only received $36. In 1S9S the amount .received from he city warrants was cut to $27 30. As we Ind relied on this to cover the expenses of the free reading room, we had to draw on the reserve fur.d every month to provide for a monthly deficit of $32 65. We have reduced our current expenses to the lowest possible amount, an aver age of $i0 oer month. As we at pres ent receive only $25 from the city our monthly deficit Ls $35. To meet, this we have, I am sorry to say, only thir teen yearly subscribers, making about $3 a month from that source and we must make up the balance of $32 a month In some way. Do you wonder that we have all sorts and kinds of en tertainments to coax the necessary funds from Astorians without resort to direct begging. To date we have yearly subscribers only thirteen, eight three-month sub scribers and an average, very small, of single book subscribers. The number of yearly readers In the free reading room has Increased from 65SS Hhe first year. 1S93, to 15.109, in 1900. The total number of readers for the nine years amounts to 106,669. The money received for that time was $8.610.6S; expended for books; furniture and necessary run ning expenses. $8590.29. We have 2057 bound volumes: of these 2R9 are free ref erence books, between 200 and 300 pa per covered b.vks. twenty-one monthly and weekly mair.izines and twenty-five daily and weekly papers and periodi cal. We have been many times cast down and badly discouraged but you know th3 old saving. "When a woman will, she will, you may depend on't," so we will, and have weathered every storm so far, snll,d serenely through what has looked like a financial typhoon more than once, and tonight are smil ingly awaiting vour congratulations and, as asuil, your generous assist ance. But for the OmHy and energetic In terference of Sheriff Llnvlle yesterday a party of fishermen would have de stroyed the trap owned by Otto Carlson near Ulind Slough. The trap has been In operation for three years and at the beginning of the present season wait moved so that It extenled farther cut into the stream. The glllnettem assert that Ihe new location of the trip Interferes with the drifting of fishing boats and complaint wis made to the Fishermen's union. Secretary Lornsten arranged with the steamer O. K. to pull out the trap to day, but Carlson heard of the union's Intentions and asked the sheriff to pro tect his property. Sheriff Llnvlle warn the captain of the boat that he would be held personally re3(onsible if h de stroyed the trap and the mVe-s of the union that prosecutes would follow If their plins were carried out.
