Maln, to Liverpool. Captain Wllliice did not report the nhlp US In dlstns and the probabilities ar en tirely r, favor of her wife arrival In Prt. The Ardnaimirchnn left Frasi-r river in Urityh Columbia, December 2, last, I'l P'li with 78.000 ease of salmon from th" Kruser river 'annerli and bound for Liverpool. At that tim- fierce Sturm were swepl:ig the North Pacific and several w-'ek after h-r departure r'vral ease of atmon were picked up firming the flotsam on the Oregon and Washington beaches, ln-tween Alea river and Wfllap'i harbor. These rswa were markf l "V. P., LIverixKil," the flint murk signifying Victoria Packer, and also with "C. '. t" and "I. U. D." In a diamond. Th"w were the mirks of th salmon aboard the Ardnainur chan. and It was believed that the ship hi fwun.lered in one of th" head gales thai w-re prevalent. Reinsurance at mice rose to SO per cent and th" price of salmon took a Jump In London, for the Ardtiamurchan wan carrying about one-fourth of the entire .-aon' output of the Fraser river ("innerle. The cargo was wi.rih tr.im.fioii while the riilp itelf 1 valued ar IT.'i.ooO by Ifogartl. & "o.. her In lon own-r. Roth cargo and ship were heavily insured and those who carried big line on the veM" reinsured all thi y could even at the enormous rate. About a month after the first case Wire picked up an officer on the steam er Tee, that pll'' between the canner- and the mouth of the river and Van couver, stated that after the Ardnamur- '!ian had l-ft her b-rth the Tees had brought a belatH load of salmon down from the upMT ijver. He said this was phccl aboiii-d the departing ship and 'm the hatches were eloped, was stored In the deckhouses and. in fact, every available nook and corner above deck. When the fact became known experts declare J the vessel might have struck a storm and In that event the cases wash ed Sdhore might have be-n Jettisoned to relieve the ship of top heaviness. Thl theory was Imrn out by the fact that no wreckage had floated ashore with the salmon and the Insurance men breathed easier. Then one of the Vic toria ow ners of the cargo asserted that the case found had been stored In the bottom of the ship, but despite this th m'e of reinsurance. dropjed to 50 per cent .anil th London wlmon market fe.l perceptibly. The re-insurance premium has re mained at 50 per tent and at that rate It Is estimated that the lucky brokers will clear over $100,000 upon the safe srrlval of the ship In port. When the stories of the finding of the Ardnamur clian's cargi were first published it was charged that the reports of the wreck were designed to Influence the London salmon market In the Interest of a cote rie of pculators. It was explained that the object of the association was for mutual protection and thar the organization had been In strumental In securing more desirable hours In the larger cities of the coun try. The Portland branch of the associa tion has several hundred members com-p-.sd of clerks employed In retail stores. There was no discussion of the probable benefits to local clerks except In a general way, but when the organ iratlon la perferted some steps will probably be taken to secure uniform hours In all the stores. Sixteen signed the roll last night and another meet ing will be held next Wednesday night In the counMI chambers, when it 13 expected that all who signed the call for last night's meeting, some forty In all. will be present and become members.
