Captain Ferguson, which arrived in early Sun day. The Ancona lay at Port Angeles for iK-arly a week, during which time rumors of her ballast spivad and she was soon besieged by curio hunters, who carried away s.Ttion of the Ma nila church in gunnysucks. The cus loins collector at Port Angeles stopped this, however, claiming that some of these curio hunters would manufacture articles out of. the old church, expose them for sale, and then the government would be after th? collector. The church was an adobe affair con structed of clay, coral and other light material. The church was put m the Vnconn as ballast at Manila months ago and has served Its purpose well When Dewey attacked Manila the church wis partially demolished and It is said that the bishop afterward finish ed the nb and now has a claim pend ing against the United. States for $130,- 00 damages for the destruction of the hurch. Anyway, the church (s now In Tacoma harbor and the greater part of It will soon be at the bottom of the bay.
