Pol president WILLIAM M'KIXLEY. Of Ohio. Por Vice-President THEODORE ROOSEVELT, Of New York. The policy of the administration has been vindicated. The American people have with no uncertain sound rung the death knell of Bryanism. The para mount issue has been chosen by our opponents and the .people have express ed themselves upon It., America's work of beneficence and philanthropy In the ends of the earth may now go on until the islands of the sea learn to look upon the Stars and Stripes as the insignia of a liberty, enlightenment and prosperity which their wildest dreams have never known. There can now be no retrogression. The die has been cast By the overwhelming ap proval of the American people, grant ed the policy of progress, America at once leaps Into the front rank ammg the nations of the earth, a position of which the weak and now abandoned policy of Bryan would certainly have deprived ua The popular franchise has been vindicated and the nations of the earth have learned again that the humblest citizen may safely be trust ed with the ballot The state of Virginia is having con siderable trouble with its "Jim Crow" law, which requires the railways to furnish separate accommodations for their white and colored passengers and that officers of steamboats plying the waters of the state shall also provide separate accommodations for the two races "as far as the construction of their boat will permit." The captain of the steamboat Ida was not long ago arrested for violation of this law but the case was dismissed upon his plea that the construction of his boat did not p-.'rmit the arrangement of such separate apartments. As a result the unhappy sheep and twice unhappy goats who take passage on the Ida will have to submit to the demoraliz ing effects of each others' society. The writer asserts that nuts are becoming inure und more recognised as valuable ad ditions to our diet but have long been extensively used as a staple article ot food th some cf the European countries, Enormous quantities of nuts are con sumed by the masses of southern Eu rope ' on account of their cheapness there as well as Ihelr nutritive value. One of the most valuable of all the nuts eaten by man is the coeoanut. which is meat and drink to natives of tropical countries. Our newly acquired tropical territories are well fitted by nature to supply our market with this both rruit and nut. Chestnuts grow well in our own state but are not ap preciated here as they are abroad. In Europe the chief morning dish for mil lions of people is made of these nuts cooked with milk and salt. They are also dried and ground into Hour, they furnish the principal Ingredient of a popular soup, they are dipped in syr up and eaten as a conserve, are baked v!th raisins, made into a kind of por ridge and Into many side dishes, some of which are esteemed as great lux uries. Nuts are often considered Indi gestible but If eaten with salt prove quite the contrary. Government ex- rts w ho have been making an extend ed study of nuts to ascertain their a'ue for man's consumption declare that one pound of nuts contains half as much .Mesh-making material and fully as much fuel for the body as the same amount of wheat flour. A quart of peanuts contains as much muscle nuking material as a pound of beef steak and can be bought at one-third or one-half the price. THE AMERICAN MILLIONS. , Chicago Times-IK-rald. The complete census returns on the country are not far from the careful and conservative estimate which was made by this paper after its "Indepen dent investigation of last May. They may cause some disappointment among people who deal In figures "roughly," but the increase of 21 per cent Is a magnificent one. and. considering qual ity as well as quantity, the 76.295.8 puts the Nation at the head of the world. The vast population of the British empire, which is now returned at about SSa.OOO.OOA. finds Its hundreds of millions among Asiatics, the British Isles con taining but 40,000.000, and the Russian empire, which has 129,000.000 Inhabit ants, has considerably less than 40,- OoO.OOO of the right sort. In any com parison which makes account of intel ligence and civilization the united States stands quite alone. Of course every unit is not a source of joy and pride, and there are large masses which need improvement, but these are relatively .f not absolutely small, and best of all, their environment makes the improvement certain. The child of the most illiterate parents haa a school near his door w hich he is com pelled to attenl, and the slightest spark of native ability is always en couraged. Ordinarily we spsak of the dangers of undesirable immigration in the North and f-;ar for the neglect of the negro in the .South, but that is when our eyes are fixed on our own stand ards. V ith all the neglect, the Ameri can negroes are '.he best-educated ne groes In the wrld, and all Immigration that is virili without being criminal tends ultimately to the god of the country. The latter fact is obvious from an acquaintance with those wards in our great cities which are filled with foreigners who have had the most distressful surroundings and antecedents in their old homes. The adults immediately show the benefits of a change which Hgnlfl-9 them with the responsibilities of citizenship in a free country and assures them ot more of the comforts of life than they have ever before enjoy-d. and the children have the common American incentive to work their way to fame or fortune. Ir. this connection we remember the remark of a Chicago teacher, whose labors ar among the poorest refugees from Russia. ' Thirty years from now," aid he, "they will be owning the fin est residences on Michigan avenue." They were phenomenally blight, and though they would have been despised in Russia as their parents were, the op portunities which the United States of fers to everyone are a guarantee of their future. The people of Illinois will be special ly pleased because this state has more than an equal share of the increase. She has lengthened her lead largely over Ohio and has gained upon both New York and Pennsylvania. Of all the states only the rotten borough of Nevada shows a decrease, and It is about time that It was made a county of some adjoining commonwealth.
