The captain of the Cedarbank assured the British vice-consul here that he Intended go ing to Portland Sunday to lay the mat ter before the authorities there, but Instead of doing so he put to sea Sun day forenoon. As the ship was short handed. Captain Batcholor has made himself amenable to the maritime laws of Great Britain. The effects of the allors were taken along; one man los ing letters attesting to his good char acter and covering & period of thirty- three years, while amrtlWhad a chedc for quite a large amount lu his locker. The Dominion government has giv en notice dated July 27. 1900, of the ex lent of the Ice pack In Behrlng sea from a report of a voyage to Cape Nome, made In April, May and June, 1900, by Captain Bucholx, of the steamship Al pha. The Alpha fell In with heavy pack Ice on April 24, In latitude 55 degrees, 55 minutes north, longitude 167 degrees. 15 minutes west, and skirted the Ice In a northwestern direction, passing south of the Prlblloft islands. On May 12 she was stopped westward of Nurilvak Island by heavy pack- Ice, and found a passage on May It through Cook's' strait. On May 16 ah was turned back In latitude 62 degrees, 45 minute north, longitude VA degree, 4: minute west, by heavy pack. She then paned west and south of St. Law rence. Island through a heavy pack, and wa not further Interrupted by Ice t-J her d'-stlnatlon, although Ice waa seen south of Indian point and west of Cape Nome. On her homeward trip she was In heavy pack ire from June 1 to June 7, surrounding St. Matthew's Island. WEEKLY CROP BULLETIN. ' The temperatures In the western part of the atate averaged about the same as last week, but east of the Cascade mountain It waa considerably cooler, tapeclally during the day tlK. In western Oregon the maximum, or day, temperatures ranged from 65 de grees to 80 d'-grees, and the minimum, or night, temperature between 45 de gree and 60 degrees. In eastern Ore gon these variations wert for day tem peratures between 62 degrees and &0 degrees, and for night temperatures be tween 40 dogrea and 64 degrees. Good rain fell in the Willamette vaU ley and coast district Friday and Sat urday, and showen occurred Saturday In aouthern Oregon. In the Columbia river valley and about Baker City the weather was cloudy and threatening all the week and small showers occurred nearly every driy. The cut grain In this section haa not yet been Injured to any great extent by these rains, but thrash ing has been hlndi-red and fears are en tertained that the unprotected grain will be damaged unless fair weather come soon. The late-sown wheat In Umatilla courty Is turning out better than the early-aown, and ome 40-bushel yield are reported. . . .. . Correspondents report the following threshing yield this Week: Mai'.no- mah county, wheat 4 to 8 bushels, oats 10 to 15, peas about 15; Polk county, wheat 3 to 12. oau 10 to 22;Columbla county, wheat 7 to 10, oats 15 to 20, bar' ley 25 to 30; Yamhill county, oata 12 to 20, barley 15 to 30; Linn coanty, wheat 2 to 17, oats 8 to 30; Lane county, what 3, oats 12; Clackamas county, fall wheat 9, spring wheat 8, fail oata 20, spring oata IS; Coo county, barley, about 40. Wheat and oats In the Willamette valley, besides yielding very poorly, are light In weight and the crop, as a whole. Is very unsatisfactory. Corn and potatoes are doing nicely. Hop picking haa Just begnn and the hops are reported of extra good quali ty, and nearly an average crop .will be harvested. Gardens and pastures have been im proved by the rains, and stock general ly la in fine condition. Frune drying will be general this week. The Petit prunes are abundant and of fine flavor, but they are rather smaller than usual. The Fellenberg prunes are extra good, both in size and luallty, but, owing to the spring frost. a very short crop will be marketed. Apples are promising. NEWS ABOUT STAMPS. An Innovation In the postal service which la sure to be of great conven ience la a plan lately adopted of fur nishing stamps In little books, with wax sheets between them. The gov ernment la to charge one cent addi tional to the amount of stamps con tained therein, and It 19 now estimat ed that the profit on these books will amount to $200,000 per annum. It Is also estimated that the sum paid for the Private Revenue Stamps placed over the top of the bottles containing Hos tetter's Bitters very nearly equals this.
