The reading public will doubtless be glad when the present epidemic of prlxe fights shall have run its course. The irrepressible Fiuslmmons Is de ttrmlned to Bob up again an J now hopes to give Jeffries the Jim-jams. . -- The Tammany police of New York city are proven to have been largely rtsponslble for the violence against Inoffensive negroes during the recent riots in the metropolis. Only another instance of Democratic imperialism. What innocent people the Russians are. to be sure, when they tell It "Russia does not seek to annex even a small bit of territory because It would be a great burden to her." A large j.iece, though, like India, or even Af ghanistan would not go amiss, now would it. Prince OukhtomskI? The Inland Empire Is the name of a new magazine, the first issue of which has just appeared. It is published at Walla Walla, and devoted to the de velopment of the resources of that sec tion of the Northwest The attractive design of Its cover, printed in colors, is symbolic of the purpose of the jpiirnal. But aside from its ar ticles descriptive of the resource? and possibilities of the "inland empire," It contains much matter of general In terest and will doubtless supplant many a so-called household periodical. The Astorian is indebted to the Hood River Glacier for a neat pamphlet en titled, "A Pen Picture of Hood River and Hood River Valley." It Is well il lustrated and tells In an interesting way, without any attempt at ostenta tion, of the attractions, natural and ar tificial, the Industries and future pos sibilities of Hood River and the Hood River valley. The -enterprise which produced the pamphlet, as well as the valuable information which it contains cencerning that region, will undoubt edly be advantageous in giving favor able impressions of the place to pros pective settlers and investors. The adoption of municipal lighting systems is becoming more and more frequent, not only in our own country, but in others as well. I Txe'XWW plant, and then the city council granted a contract U a private company for ten years. The people of Astoria are grate ful for a city council that has the In terests of the people and not of any light company at heart. In an address recently, the mayor of Marshal'.town, la., said: "It would take more than theoretical reasoning and brilliant elo quence to convince us that municipal ownership Is not an unqualified sue ce.M mmmmmmmmmm The recent discoveries of rich depos its of precious metals and petroleum In Washington. Oregon and California prove clearly that nature Is not par tlsan In matters pertaining to natural resources, says the Tacoma Ledger, The rapid development of mining prop erties In Washington and Oregon and the discovery of rich oil veins in Cal ifornia have4 added great' Impetus' to commerce throughout the entire coast The Inilux of Eastern capital seeking investment In these new enterprises has rendered the financial condition of the Western country much easier and a highly prosperous era has followed In its trail as one of the immediate results. Had the pioneer settlers of this country begun the work of devel opment on the Pacific instead of the Atlantic coast, what a vast difference might have been wrought In the subse Quent destinies and natural wealth of the country! ABOUT THE DRY DOCK. Portland Chronicle. The Spokane Spokesman-Review says Oregon has been too slow In pushing the dry-dock project for the Colum bia river. If the movement had been started ten years ago the chances for success would have been brighter, for Oregon's shipping interests at that time overshadowed all others on the Northwest coast. Today Puget sound has the dry-dock and will probably be the only American point north of San Francisco for the repair of warships and seagoing craft It is doubtless true that Oregon has not been as xealous as she should have been, but hard work on the part of our congressional delegation will yet secure to us the dock. A fresh water dock is a necessity to shipping, and the Columbia river Is the natural loca tion for such dock. Doubtless Wash ington and California congressmen will retard any measure looking to the erec tion of this dock, but by sending our strongest men to congress and backing up their efforts we will yet be sue cessful m; J .
